clutch opinions

So since there wasn't a review in the product review sticky about any clutches, I wanted to get a few opinions. I'm in the market for a stage 1 clutch.

I've seen "stage 1" clutches on ebay.

Are these legit or would you not take a chance with them? Would it be wiser to shell out an extra 100-200 for an Exedy or ACT or are you just paying for the brand name?

Check out the link below, this is about the best price I have found. It is OE though, But an exedy.

I did see they have a stage 1 for about 336 bucks also.

I found an Exedy stage 1 for 313 shipped but they are back ordered. I found it on amazon and got it through horsepower freaks and I called them and they said that Exedy was waiting on parts from their supplier so at the moment you cant get an Exedy from any distributor I guess

edit: the stage one they have on there only comes with one bearing?

I'd reccomend a 5th gen clutch (oem) or exedy. If you need a clutch now, ACT isn't bad, but pricey. You only get one bearing, release bearing - what more do you want? I guess pilot bearing? Don't bother, don't need it on the VQ, complete waste of effort and time. If you need instructions on 'how to' for the clutch, see my sig. The link is my write up for rebuilding the 5spd (so, gives you tools need and how to remove / install the trans). Doing the clutch is easzzzyy! Nothing to it really.

Pilot bearing is preventative maintenance, it makes sense to take the extra time and very small amount of extra money to replace it while you're in there. Pilot bearing failure would mean you would need to do another clutch job over a stupid bearing. I've taken apart a manual and an auto trans last semester, I just really don't have the time, place or access to tools/equipment that would make a clutch job easy.

edit: By the way, I read your write up. That's slightly against text book how you removed the bearings without a press, but nonetheless I see why you did it that way, nice job on the rebuild.

Thanks - it was unorthodox for sure, but it worked. lol

As for the pilot bearing, the VQ doesn't use it, so there's no need to replace it.

Really? I know some engines don't use one but some clutch kits for VQ come with a pilot bearing. Is that just because the same clutch kit can be used on a VG?

Most likely, yea. I just know that none of us on here (well - I shouldn't speak for the entire .Org) so I'll say most all of us on here don't do it. If you look at the FSM and detailed pix, you'll see what I mean.
