camshaft sensor questions

hey boys. fellow 5th genner here running into the 4th gen section for a supposed camshaft sensor question.

it's my gf's sister 97. the car will not start at times and then if you do get it running, it will shut down randomly. she took it to a mechanic who pulled coded and said it was the camshaft sensor. i'm ready to buy it but did some research here and i see a lot of dispute between the camshaft and the crankshaft position sensor. before i jump in and buy it, i was wondering if anyone could clarify the difference. should i trust the mechanic?

lastly, the mechanic did say that if the car did shut off, unplug the battery ground cable for 30 seconds then plug it back in. something about that reseting the ECU and the car would start up. while she hasnt' been 100% successful with that, it apparently has helped out.

Thanks guys.

If the code pulled said it was for a cam sensor then replace the cam sensor. It would keep the car from starting and would cause it to die randomly. And disconnecting the battery would reset the ecu but wont have anything to do with allowing the car to start.
