Any way to get the lights to go off faster in "auto" mode

Seems to take forever for my headlights to go out after I turn off my car, is there any way to shorten the time?

Not to sound like an as$, but why don't you just turn them completely off?

The short answer, CONSULT-II.

The long answer from the EL.pdf:

Because with them on auto, I never have to worry about them being on when they are supposed to be (like at dusk).

RR5-I want to get my ECU reflashed anyway (hopefully it will take care of my weird P0340 pending code issue), so I'll see if the dealer can also tweak the headlight settings too.

[QUOTE]

Everything I've read (and my experience) dusk and dawn are the two points in the day which the human eye has the MOST difficult seeing and differentiating colors, depth, and movement. I remember the TN driving manual even states you are supposed to drive with lights on beginning at dusk and even in the early daylight hours of the morning. I don't recall if it is an actual law, I doubt anyone gets ticketed, but it's still a safety/visability issue = people seeing ME, not so much me seeing them!

@Scottwax Just use the same principle, approach service techs on a smoke break and ask if you can change the auto headlight delay. If you are paying for work to be done, just go back and ask them to change the setting.

Get them to bump the timing to 17 degrees too.

This is what I do:

1. Get in car
2. Start car
3. Turn headlights to auto setting

After I reach my destination:

4. Turn light switch from auto to off
5. Shut off car.

I know what you mean about wanting to just keep the switch in auto though. My Celica had a really aggressive lighting system. Even if the switch was in the off position, the lights would come on if it was dark and only turn off when you shut the car off. I actually miss that a little.
EDIT: Don't the lights automatically turn off once you press the lock button on the key fob?

If it is, I can't imagine Nissan or every other car I've seen with HIDs would even allow an auto setting for the headlights.

I think it's only bad for the headlights if you turn them on and off rapidly.

The key fob when you press the lock function will turn off the interior lighting, even with my viper alarm system locking the doors and arming the system only turns off the interior lighting ... and like Scott has said the headlamps stay on way to long ... interesting to read in the fsm that with the consult ll that the time delay can be adjusted.

Damn, Five minutes in fact is WAY too long. It's easier just to turn your lights off when you leave the car. lol

I just discovered this thread because I just picked up my '02 SE today.

I turned the car off this evening and noticed the lights stayed on, with the auto setting.

On my fathers' '00, the lights turn off as soon as the key is turned off. I personally like that approach much better.

Anyways, if anyone finds a way to adjust it, I'm interested.

Only thing I saw was something about Consult-II. I don't know what that is though.

Thats a Nissan/Infiniti dealership diagnostic tool. Just ask a dealer to change the time it takes to turn off the headlamps.

Great! Thanks.. I'm going there to pick up an intake manifold gasket and some other crap in the next few days anyways, I will make sure to do that.

Thank you!

You could also try looking for a service tech on break and just ask him.

That's one of my favorite things to do.. Going to the service dept is a hassle most of the time. Although the guys at my dealership aren't half bad normally.
