I know the the vin plate on the firewall list the trans code but can you tell if the car has a HLSD from the VIN number?

No, it is not in the VIN...

but it is on the ID plate on the firewall...

Trans Axle code for 6sp HLSD is RS6F51H...and RS6F51A for non-HLSD.

So what is a RS5F51A? My car has a RS6F51H as listed on the the VIN plate in the engine bay. Recently my car has started showing signs of excessive input shaft bearing wear.So I purchase a used tranny from an 04 to replace it.

I bought the tranny from this car

I called the local nissan parts department to find out what the part # for the trans in the car is and they told me the replacement part number for the 04 with the vin is posted is 32010-7Y076 which is a 04 6speed LSD tranny.

I am really confused by what i am getting. I am hoping it is a replacement HLSD tranny since my car came with a HLSD but at this point don't know what to think since everyone tells me to look at the id plate but the id plate list a tranny that i don't know of.

I was am hoping since the vin pulls up HLSD trans as a replacement it must mean that the car has one?

That is a 5 speed without limited slip. RS5 means 5 speed, RS6 means 6 speed. nismoSEXIMA explained the letter.

It looks like you purchased an automatic transmission to replace your 6 speed manual.

Return it and ***** at who ever gave you that (unless it was your mistake).

No the car is a 6speed. The junkyard checked. It had 3 pedals. My only guess now is the transcode they entered at the factory when they generated the id plate was wrong.

Well that sucks but as long as it fits either way it is going in my car since the HSLD in there now has some bearing issues I wonder why when they pull the vin to get the part number for the transmission it gives them 32010-7Y076?

RS5F51A is definitely an Altima 5sp manual trans code without HLSD. Now, what that code is doing on an '04 Maxima ID sticker is anybody's guess!

The FSM lists two 6sp man trannys for the '04 Maxima:

If the 6sp tranny is actually coming out of the pictured car, it will be one of those transmissions and should mate right up with your '03.

And to finally answer your question, after the tranny is in, you can do a burnout and you should be able to tell whether it's a HLSD tranny or not!

Good luck!

Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe the person who greated the tag at nissan screwed it up? there is no way they would have installed a 5mt in a maxima and the owner of that car not notice.

I called dave b. and he looked up the options list on that car for me

Your are correct. I have an 01 AE and I have the V at the end of my trans code. Also I have to get some bearings in my transmission replaced probably next week. Car making weird rubbing noise when in gear. Tranny mechanic showed me how bad my drivers side axle had to much movement in it. And said that my bearings were shot. Not gonna be pretty on the pocket $$$

Actually, the trans codes for the '00-'01 5 sp Maximas are RS5F50A and RS5F50V according to the FSM...but that's neither here nor there.

If Dave B pulled from the Nissan system and it says that VIN had HLSD, it probably does...
