The other day while I was cleaning the car and was only poking around when for the first time ever, I saw that there was a bolt and nut going though the middle of the gas pedal assembly.

I checked to see if it was loose and indeed it was kind of loose. So I took a 10mm socket and tightened it up a couple notches. I then proceeded to do a pedal position relearn and the pedal response became so much better, I can't explain it.

I doubt that this is a real adjustment for the pedal. Maybe I'm having a placebo effect.

 

PLACEBO.

If you had a 5th gen which has drive by cable, maybe. But the 5.5 gen has drive by wire.

 

^^ Please explain? I thought a cable was essentially a bundle of wires. Or of the sort.

 

the DE-k's are the last of the cable operated TB's. the VQ's in the 5.5 have drive by wire. no more throttle cable.

 

I love good old throttle cable!

This. Toyota could have prevented their whole problem had they just stuck to cable-driven throttles.

Drive-by-wire is a PITA. I'd much prefer a cable-driven throttle body over our pathetic electronic TBs.

 

^ x2. But one upside to DBW is no more IACV to short out the ECU.

 

As for throttle cable, I know someone who just had the Toyota DBW problem happen to them and they have a 2000 Corolla. I thought the problem was only extensive to the DBW cars but I guess not. Even their throttle cables are failing now.

As for my excitement above, I think the tightening of the bolt didn't do anything to the actual response but I think the pedal is just harder now to push but somehow it feels I need to press on it less in order to get to the respective accleration.

 

you probably raised the pedal or angled it better so your foot hits it and pushes it lower slightly giving u more power...


sorta like when u adjust your seat all the way to the steering wheel and u cant help but floor it everytime. lolll

 

If you took a little "free play" out of the pedal assembly, initial tip-in at your foot will translate to more happening at the throttle plate.
