Hello , i looked at the 4gen how to's and i found one but the link its dead. does anyone have any how to's on a clutch job ? im looking to do my clutch soon and just want to check it out. thx

 

a haynes manual should be sufficient. but in a nutshell:
drain fluid
remove intake and battery (basically anything in the way, including unplugging sensors)
remove starter
unbolt slave cylinder and other lines etc
remove axles
unbolt tranny bolts
remove tranny mount
you should be able to grab the tranny by the starter hole and guide it to the ground
from there its just unbolting the pressure plate and installation is reverse

if you need more then that, haynes is your friend if u cant find a writeup

 

do i need to remove any sub frames or anything like that ?

 

No u dnt have to remove the motor subframe/crossmember support infact u can get away with removing one axle (drivers side) if you feel daring enuff.

 

Also being a senior member i would hope you know there is various writeups all over the web. Maxima.org isnt the only place. Motorvate, vqpower, nico, google ir ur pal... jus saying

 

Jus make sure to sand / polish down the mating surface of engine to tranny. PPl try to do their own clutch job and neglect to do this and have starting / grounding issues later.

That plus a Haynes manual is what I used. I removed both axles, but left the cross member in place. I bought a transmission jack from Harbor Freight to make it easier. I have removed other transmissions with a floor jack, a block of wood, and an assistant, but the tranny jack is much easier.

 

look up JTZMax's tranny rebuild writeup. No, youre not rebuilding the trans, but it has the steps and pics. pretty straight forward really

Remove driver side axel....intake...battery....transmision.

Unbolt clutch, flywheel.

Rewind. !

 

Excellent write up!!. Can't thank you enough. I did the flywheel replacement about 2-3 weeks ago. I did not remove the crossmember but I did remove both axles.

Best part about the max is that the brakes and balljoints don't need to be disconnected for the axle removal. With airtools the hardest part about the clutch job is the transmission removal and installation. This job goes a LOT easier with the help of a friend to maneuver the transmission.

Thank you guys for all you help . now im just going to order a clutch kit. still debating between 4 gen or 5 gen clutch . and yest motorvates is down .

 

why would there be a debate? Get the 5th gen it is a better stonger clutch and will last longer. It is not as hard to press as ppl say. Just harder.
