Check engine light won't go off and it reads that the cluster is sending the wrong signal. Mechanic said my only bet is to replace the entire unit. Wondering if replacing it will actually alleviate the problem.

Looking for someone who has had the same issue because I want to know if this is the only way around the issue, because we all know what happens to the value of the car once that is changed.

Any help or insight is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

 

The cluster is reading a "wrong" signal?

The cluster doesn't read a signal, the ECU does.

So you have no codes?

One side of the MIL is connected to +12 volts (pin 41 of the cluster), and the other side is connected to the ECU(pin 46 of the cluster goes to pin 18 of the ECU). To turn on the light, and signal a malfunction, the ECU grounds it's side of the MIL which causes the light to illuminate. What you can try to do is disconnect your cluster and the ECU, and see if there is continuity between pin 46 of the plug that goes into the cluster and a ground on the chassis, to test if the wire is shorted to ground on its way down to the ECU. Also, check for continuity between pin 46 of the cluster, and a cluster ground (pins 10, 31, and 38 on the cluster), to test if there is a short in the cluster itself.

 

I'm thinking you need a new mechanic.
