Rear brakes moan when moving from a stopped position

Got a '98 with 170k and not many issues with the car EVER (Love my Max!) but now I'm noticing that every time I release the break from a stopped position, I hear moaning for 1-2 seconds. I do not feel any drag while coasting so I'm starting to think it maybe a lazy caliper (piston does not detract quick enough) but I'm not sure. Anyone else have a similar situation? Tnx!

Mine do the same (But rarely)... Usually on cold foggy mornings right after I drop the E-brake and roll back outta the driveway, I have never had the problem while driving though.

Haven't done anything about it either, in for a sollution!

When my rear caliper seized up last summer I could only hear it dragging while slowly accelerating also. Coasting along at a faster speed you won't hear nor feel it.
The guided pins that slide in the caliper brackets were rusted on both so I relaced all 4. Only 1 of the rear caliper pistons was seized so I just replaced that one.
Remove the tires after raising the car. Try rotating the wheels by hand. Also have someone apply the brakes and you'll see for yourself if anythings seized up.

mine does it. See clip. All i did was to tear it all done, grease some sutff including the piston and then it went away somehow.

I'm going to try re-greasing the pistons on each of the calipers and see if that works. Thanks for the input/suggestions!

...check parking brake adjustment,,may need a couple clicks adustment,,,also parking brake cables to each wheel...check to see that they are moving freely and not rusted from cuts into the external rubber covering annd water seepage into the cable causing the cable to rust and be partialy or fully seized....this is a known problem,,when these vehicles are sometimes put up on a lift, the cable is pinched and cut...doesnt take long for the cable to rust...I had this problem twice, symptom was dragging rear brake pad...

With the age of the car, the best bet is the rear calipers are dragging. Sometimes (specially if the dust boot on the caliper is not broken) the culprit is the adjuster threads on the rear emergency brake mechanism. Look carefully at the rotor through the wheels. If they look rough (circular ridges) just put in BOTH rear calipers. No sense even trying anything else. The road environment wreaks havoc on these parts and in NJ with the northern winters, I say you got excellent use out of the existing calipers. Very easy to replace. Rotors, calipers and pads.

I have noticed my '98 w/173k miles started doing the same thing. What did you all replace? Should I just look to grease the pistons and do a break job? How tough is it to replace the parking break cable?

+1 on on replacing the calipers... I had the same issue at 150K miles... Road salt kills the rears, they will eventually have problems with the piston not retracting properly and the brakes dragging...

I have the same problem on passenger rear side because the brake cable mounting tab rusted through and the cable doesn't sit in the proper location anymore. I need to replace the ebrake cable on that side.
