Was Autozoning earlier today (looking for the magical SeaFoam) when I came across a transmission fluid additive that supposedly helps it not to slip. My tranny is slipping in a bad way between 1st and 2nd even when under moderate acceleration. Its much worse at WOT.

I'm going to assume this would be a very bad idea... unless told otherwise.

 

How many miles do you have? I keep on seeing you post problems with your car here and there whereas I have the same car and not a single problem....ever.

 

I drive an Infiniti Lemon Sport with 102k miles on it. haha

EDIT: Or maybe its the Infiniti I35 Lemon package. I don't remember what the dealer said exactly. (This car has also ruined my desire to ever purchase another Nissan/Infiniti.)

 

At that mileage I doubt there is some magic fluid which will cure your transmission problems. You can prob band-aid with one of those shift kits.

 

Ultimately I need to take it to a tranny shop to find out what the real problem is. If (and by if, I mean mean when) they have to tear into it, I'll see if they can install the shift kit to further bulletproof it from F*ing up again.)

(This will be the 3rd time I've had it in the shop for transmission work, although the 1st two times were under warranty... with under 40k miles on the engine. So not looking forward to forking over $$ this time.)

My advice is never use any sort of "Additive." Your tranny is slipping? Well at 100k, its sort of at that time if the fluid has never been changed before. I would tell you to do a flush, but that might make things worse, so your best bet is to just ride it out. Then save up for a G37 like i am.

Is there any possibility that a CVT tranny will fit on a Maxima '01 SE???? I would love to put one of those on my car!!! Does anyone knows?? Maybe you can solve your tranny situation with one of these!! I think that CVT's are great what do you thinks guys???

Yes, but I'm already dreading throwing more money at this car. For projects of that magnitude, a second car is a must (which I lack). And as much as I'd like a manual transmission, I do a lot of stop and go city driving, so it would get annoying really fast.

 

I went to Boston this past weekend and noticed my car slipped 2 times. One time really bad, RPMs were stuck at 4.3k and I literally had to let go, brake and re-accelerate. The car was loaded with 4 passengers in the back..weird

I'm at 80k and did a drain and fill at 60k.

Exactly! That's why I don't want to do any major modifications to it. I want the original parts (possibly with the addition of a TransGo shift kit) to work as they should.

 

You may have been looking at fluid with friction modifier in it.. Its a fluid with something like clucth material added so the worn clutch packs can now grab when changing gears..

 

Yeah, I have a 1-2 slip that's driving me nuts! It only happens at WOT. I've heard solenoids, clutch packs... I don't know what to do!!!!

 

Would this help anything then if I added it to my fluid ya think?

The 1st two times I had my tranny worked on under warranty they replaced the "valve body." I have no idea what this is exactly, but I know its expensive.

 

Sounds like that tranny has been an Albatros since day one. Buy a used one and swap it out. Just my opinion.

 

So, yes or no to trying this "No-Slip" Tranny stuff? Ultimately I'll have to dump some $$ into the tranny or buy a new one, but I'm hoping this will at least help the slipping a little and buy me some time.

 

at the risk of repeating myself... NO. you'll probably do more damage. All these additives and stuff are 95% bogus.

 

Agreed. Unless you've got a bad shift solenoid, it sounds like there are internal issues in the transmission.

Other than the common soft/minor slip on the 2-3 shift when it is cold (and before the engine warms up), mine has been shifting fine and has 176,700 miles on it. I change the fluid twice a year and add the Lucas transmission conditioner.
