Replacing O2 sensor (bank 1 sensor 2)

I have been getting SES codes P0139 and P1147. After researching the forums, I have determined that the O2 sensor that I need to replace is under the car. I replaced an O2 sensor on my wife's car and it was fairly easy, however it was the one that I could reach from the engine bay. I got under the car and located the sensor but I could not see where the wiring led to.

My questions is can the O2 sensor under the car (bank 1 sensor 2) be done at home in the garage or is this something that needs to be left to a mechanic? For anyone that has done this, was it easy, semi-difficult, extremely difficult?

It can be done at home assuming you have the tools (jack, jack stands, correct sockets). The wiring is very difficult to follow up into the engine. The hardest part is reaching the clips that secure the wiring.

Its a fairly time consuming job and semi difficult, but I'm not the most experienced car guy either.

ha I am about to do this in a couple weeks. Thought it was a quick, easy job. Guess I'll have to put a little more time aside.

The hardest part was trying to pull the sensor out "bottom one that is" he had to use a birdbeak pillars to grip and pull the sensor out but as long as you have a clear view and a lot of arm clearance you should be ok

well I have the 02 sensor socket on the sensor right now but I can't fit my breaker bar over it. I took off a heat shield but I don't see how I can do this without unbolting a pipe. Any advice would be great.

Spray it with penetrating oil and let it sit overnight. Tap it with a screwdriver and hammer to loosen it. Then come back and apply another liberal dousing and attempt removal. Mine came off easily enough. The clip for the rear is on the top by the intake manif9ld. Passenher side: it is a blue clip. You see it run down along some thermal tape protected wires. Good luck.

I am hoping this isnt TOO bad, But its pricey....and just curious, does it matter what O2 you get ? Are they not all the same model ?

Thanks

a narrow band is a narrow band far as im concerned. Just tell autozone, napa, or whoever what you need. for the one downstream i know with my headers on i take off the passenger tire and ive got a straight shot at it to where i can put the extensions on the 02 socket and get it free. no issues.

Can't you heat it with a torch? I did this on both of my cars (93 & 00) and they came off fairly easy. Portable torch ain't that expensive either.

Penentrating oil and bring the vehicle to operating temp. This will heat up the exhaust and then use the special socket and it will break loose (w/ exhaust hot, be careful not to get burnt).

I got all O2s replaced in 4 hrs (www.ngk.com), it is a breeze if you get the socket for rent from autozone!!! Good luck.

Bank 2 is after the cat correct? I just got a 0139 and 1147 code today and looks like it would be the o2 sensor right?

Why do these o2 sensors go????My 01 Maxima SE has the
p0139 code come up all the time, The car only has 35,000 miles on it and it been coming up since the car ahd 15,000 miles in it. All i do is erace the code and a few months later it comes back.
The car runs the same either way, otherwise it's a great car.

I'm probably telling you what you already know, but this doesn't fix anything.

Try running a car or two of Seafoam through your gas tank. Sometimes that will clean up the sensors and your problem will go away. And run Shell Premium, our sensors seem to like it better than other gasoline brands.

Yours are probably just tripping codes because of lack of use! Sounds like you need to take it for a good 20-minute run at 65mph and keep your rpms up over 3000 the whole time, blow the cobwebs out.
