key stuck in starter tranny related

The other day I was driving down the street. While I was driving a friend accidentally put my car in reverse and the car abruptly turned off. I pulled over and was not able to pull the key out and my auto tranny could be shifted while the car was parked and off. Any ideas on what broke in the tranny so I can get my key out.

how did he get into reverse anyway?
the shifter wont go in unless speed is under 5mph with brake applied.
if the shifter is not in P, you cant remove the key.

Pardon me for being skeptical, but, is there more to that story?....

The shifter is in park and the key will not come out. But at the same time I can move the shifter without steping on the brake. there must be something broken in the shifter on tranny that will not allow me to take the key out.
