Hi, so without going into details I did something stupid, and a part of my left hand side bumper just fell into pieces. It was old and had rust anyway, so a chunk just fell off. Can't take pictures now but here is a pic to describe the bumper:




That part basically kind of broke off. Now I'm so worried because I don't know how much it will cost to fix. Does anybody know the price it would cost to fix? Would they have to replace the whole front bumper or would they just mold it somehow, and how much would it cost?

Also, I have the 2 chunks of the bumper that broke off, I kind of put one chunk back in and it looks better but still pretty ****ty.

 

You could replaced the whole bumper by buying one off a .org member or craigslist for pretty cheap.

But if you want to take it to a shop its going to be a BUNDLE!

 

if its the red part, that's the bumper cover. there's a steel bumper that's attached to the chassis. what r u trying to point out with the arrow btw?

 

Well the part of the bumper you have marked is plastic so yeah I dont see how that could be rusted. That is the bottom lip of your bumper cover its plastic. You could have a body shop mold some fiber glass and make it look decent or they could plastic weld a piece on there, but from my experience it would be easier to just replace it. You could order a bumper cover from ebay for pretty cheap if I am not mistaken and take it to Maaco and have them paint it and put it back on yourself. Or you could have them put it on for a little over an hour of labor which would come out to around 50 bucks. If they paint it they should only charge you around 100 bucks just to paint it.

unless he is talking about the metal fender that's located inbetweent the wheel and the plastic bumper cover. that's a notorious spot for rust to attack out cars. either way, easily over 150 to fix.

 

Yeah I think he is talking about the fender guys.

It was probably rusted out before, as 99% of 4th gens have rust accumulating in those spots.

Also, put some air in your tire...looks really low on the drivers side front...

Yeah. He'll probably need a new/used fender + labor to paint it.

 

get another bumper cover, it'll be cheaper then getting that one fixed

I don't think it's plastic, it's this grainy rock substance kind of thing. The bumper itself is plastic but the part where it broke off to the side just feels like metal. How much would a bumper cover cost? Anyway to make it cheaper? I'm not sure where I could find an aftermarket 96 Maxima bumper in Toronto...

What would be the cheapest option? Plastic welding sounds pretty cheap?

phone an autobody shop and see if they will tell you where they get there replacement parts from. You could try that route.

Plastic welding is the cheaper alternative, but comes with ZERO warranty against it cracking or falling off again. Then you still have to deal with painting it.


Personally, I would rather just get a new "refinished/repaired" bumper and take it to one of those cheaper body shops and see about them repainting it. I got a replacement bumper for my 97 for about 140 bucks in alberta so they are out there you just have to be patient and look around.

It is the fender not the bumper, which is metal not plastic. I would know since I took it off when I had to repair a dent. A new fender would cost $215. A body shop will be able to weld fix it, but honestly I don't think that it would be any cheaper vs. installing a new fender yourself.

EDIT: I just remembered that a new fender comes unpainted, so I guess you can't really do much about it all by yourself unless you can paint, but that is even more money.

 

You need to be more clear about where the actual rust is.

The part with the red marking is the fender, not the bumper cover.

There is a seam that runs along the body from the corner lamp straight down.

The piece in front of that seam is the plastic bumper cover. Plastic cannot rust. It's chemically impossible.

The piece between that seam and the wheel well is the metal fender. Metal can rust.

From the sounds of it, and from the picture, you have a rusted fender. Getting a new bumper cover isn't going to help at all if the fender is rusted. Before you go out and throw away money replacing something that isn't broken, post an actual picture of the damage.
