How many miles on Fuel Pump until replacement (98 SE, 190K)
How many miles on Fuel Pump until replacement (98 SE, 190K)
I just bought a 188 K 98 Max SE, I am slowly restoring it from the last owner's neglect.
At 205 K a Subaru I once owned had a fuel pump die and at 180K a SAAB I once owned suffered a dead fuel pump.
Am I understaningly apprehensive about changing my fuel pump now? Is it time?
How long has your pump lasted?

you know, this has came to my mind here lately while i was fixing all problems on my car getting it perfect. it now runs perfect but i always wonder when is that damn oem pump gonna go.
well i dont know but will post when it does and by that time you can maybe get a heads up. im at 295,000 miles and pump still good i regular change the fuel filter and run chevron fuel injector cleaner every 6 months.

its a lot different out here in the northwest.
i use my car on a lot of long highway trips. i bring tools and a jack and can fix a lot of things, but there have been times when i had to wait overnight in a small town for a part.
a roadside breakdown on a highway trip with a snowstorm could have some bad consequences
who wants a dead fuel ump in
This may be an apples to oranges thing but my last car was an 89 Mazda 626 which I had 438,000 miles on and it was still the original fuel pump although I did have to replace the fuel tank shortly before it died.

if you're that worried about it, just change it. it's like $75 for a replacement pump and 30-45 minutes of work for a first timer, though it sounds like you've got experience with changing them, so it will probably take you even less time. they are really easy to get to in this car. you can access the pump with about 2 minutes worth of work. pop the back seat clips off, remove 3 bolts, fuel pump is right there.
I've owned four 4th gens, the highest mileage of which was like 240k, another 200k one, and my current one with 170k. I've never had to change a fuel pump in 9 years of ownership of these cars.

I have 220K on the 96 with original pump.
I also have a 99 Max and 99 I30T (Daughter's cars) both with original pump.
These cars just keep on ticking.
Is your making suspisious noises? Like the other poster said, 30 minute job, if you suspect anything just change it, but keep the old pump.
good luck.

In the old days I, when first driving, would run my tanks as low as possible sometimes. Mechanical fuel pumps then. Now however, I try to fill up at half tank. That way the pump is always fat, dumb, & happy with fuel & doesn't have to work quite as hard.
