Gauging Interest in a 3" exhaust from Cattman

Hello fellas, Im going to be turboing my car soon so I need to upgrade my current Cattman exhaust from 2.5 to 3". Currently Cattman does not make a 3" exhaust for the 4th gen and Im not sure if there is any benefit of using a 3" exhaust on the VQ30 if you are not Turboed. I know from speaking to Brian Catts earlier, that the VQ3.5 does benefit from using a 3" exhaust thats the reason they currently make them for the 5th gens.

The reason Im creating this thread is to see if anyone is interested in a 3" exhaust from Cattman, Brian tells me he needs at least 10 people that are interested in this to start producing it. Why a 3" exhaust from Cattman?

No annoying drone sound, an exhaust system with good sound, excellent performance, quality made and superb fitment. Im more than happy with my Cattman setup now However, I need to upgrade to 3" do to adding a Turbo, so it must go along with the Cattman headers. If any of you are interested, please add your name to the list so we can get this going. I'll let Brian chime in on price etc. Again we need at least 10 who are seriously interested.

Wait... Why not just get a 5th gen 3" Exhaust? And work with a muffler shop to make the dual tip a single??

Or just get a G/D on making a single tip muffler on the 3" exhaust, I'd be in for just the muffler though.

Also, I need to call up brian, I will be looking for a good muffler soon and I like how his sound....

I'd like to add that people with a VQ35 swap would obviously greatly benefit from this set-up. For the record, there are some VQ30DEK folks that have also ordered and installed this system and are pleased.

Take it from me, Mr. Quiet Exhaust Fan #1, this thing sounds excellent on the VQ35, and IMO, the VQ30 & 35 sound similar in FWD trim.

If I had the opportunity back in my 4th gen modding days, given all the tuning advancements in recent years this would be on my list.

I'd be interested if there are enough gains on a VQ30DE with bolt-ons to justify replacing my existing Cattman setup.

Explain.

Remember, it's a "cat" back, so ahh, it doesn;t include the cat .. unless you go with a fast cat, which I'm not sure if he makes them for the A32

Good luck. I tried this last year and couldn't round up enough people. Here's the thread.
**The wait is over! Official thread for 95-99 3” Cattman Catbacks**

I wish Brian would do a deal for 5 people instead of ten. I know one other person that would buy immediately too. I think when Brian did the 3" for the 5th gens, he only required 7 people? I forget now....

All catbacks bolt to the flange downstream of the cat. No?

If so, i am wondering how 3" piping is going to mate to 2" stock piping.
It can def be done, jus wondering how. For smooth flow i wd think the 3" catback flange would have a 2" inlet flange then flare out to 3".

That's a nice initial response, thanks to Maxprivate for kicking this off. Maybe this will work this time. I've learned that you can never tell - a part that falls flat one year can succeed the next. I'll try to review some of the comments I can respond to...

First, our exhaust systems have a number of advantages that will certainly apply to a 3" 4th gen system if we make it. However, I cannot tell you that it won't drone - all performance exhausts drone at least a little, and this tends to be more noticeable with an auto tranny because it tends to keep engine rpm zone where drone shows up.

As similar as the 4th and 5th gen chassis appear from the outside, the two exhaust systems are completely different - no potential for crossover, b-pipe or muffler/rear section.

OH YES, this system would be exactly right for a VQ35 swap. I'd bet there are quite a few more VQ35 swaps than turbo'ed VQ30s out there.

I can't quantify the impact of running the 3" with a VQ30DE engine, but Nissan motors are surprisingly immune to low backpressure, and quite a few of the 00/01 guys with n/a VQ30DE motors have installed the 3" and are happy with it.

I'll admit that I'm not sure how far back in time this cat style goes, but the stock cats on 5th gen maxes actually have a 2.75" flange opening that works fine with the 3" catback and makes a very nice transition from a 2.5" header y-pipe (to the 3" catback). We make our Cattman FastCats with a 2.75" opening too, and to be honest, I wouldn't see much point in running a stock cat with a 3" system, it would become a significant bottleneck. Yep, you'll definitely want a FastCat to go with the 3" system...

The Cattman FastCat will fit all 95-03 Maximas, BUT it does not have the small O2 port for the OBDI O2 sensor that is found in 95/96 Maximas (you can just add the port).

I set a threshold of 10 orders for regular production parts, but we could make this fly with 8 orders.

Thanks everyone, for your interest. More questions?

Brian

Here's a simplified rundown of what we'll need to create a 3" catback for the 4th gen:

1. a minimum of 8 orders, secured by 30% deposits
2. Patience and faith, because developing a new part takes extra time
3. A 4th gen Max for a couple fitment sessions in the OC/SoCal (we offer the owner a discount on the part)

Impossible to know an exact price before we develop the part, but since our 4th gen 2.5" catback was a little less expensive than the 5th gen version, then I assume (but can't guarantee) the same would be true for a 3" system.

Brian,

Can you commit to a price at this point at time?

Do you recall, does the Fastcat I bought from you a couple of years ago have a 2.5" opening or 2.75"?? There's been changes over the years as far as size, right? I can't remember what I have.....

Thanks

James

My 98 Max is bone stock.

James, Im using the fast cat also. I believe the opening is 2.75 and it can be used with a 3" exhaust but don't quote me on that. I'll let Brian verify this for sure.

I'm definitely in on this, I hope Brian will consider more like 5 people like Wiz said. Like Brian Catts said just because it doesn't kick off on sales one year doesn't mean it won't in the next. Let's make this happen Brian, James already volunteered his 4th gen as a donor for the project.

Yeah, but he wants it to be worth his time and efforts before commiting to it. Takes money to create a new project like this. Kind of bad business to invest money like that in hopes of getting it back in a few years vs right away.

Yeah, but often the "Build it, and they will come" approach actually works better.

Realistically this is true. However, this is exactly what happened with the 5 th gen 3" Cattman exhaust. Brian told me the whole story about it. Hopefully he'll just go ahead with the project.

^ True dat, I'm one of those cheap @$$ .org members.

I'm interested in at least a muffler, as for the whole catback I'd have to see what 30% cost first lol.

Usually when you buy cheap you get cheap. Most likely it will be 30% of 680 or so. I know for my 2.5 exhaust it was about 650 a couple years ago. Just a wild guess.

Well the 5th gen 3" setup sells for
659.99 w/o a resonator and $739.99 with a resonator.
When the Wizard was setting up the 3" GD for the 4th gen its was $684.99 without a resonator and $749.99 with a resonator, so Im sure it would be some where in those ball park prices.

And I agree about going cheap. I find it absurd when folks go cheap, and then later complain about fitment, quality and etc. knowing they went cheap in the first place.

Maxprivate, yes you are right, but when you buy cheap, you should use the money saved wiseley to prevent these cheap products from cheaping out on you and in the end you can end up with a better product then the expensive one.

Brian said the 5th gen 3" was like 750-800.... I didn't wanna argue over something so silly when the product is in it's earliest of early stages.

Sorry, I missed a post or two back in the middle of this thread. Thanks very much for offering a test car, that can be a major hurdle.

You asked about the cat dimensions over time, and I'm embarrassed to say that I'm not sure. They've all been made from 2.5" cats, but at some point we decided to stretch that to a 2.75" OD so we could configure the end flanges like the Nissan stock parts.
