Over repair? Thinking of doing the Chain while I do the water pump

Over repair? Thinking of doing the Chain while I do the water pump

I have the crankcase pulley off, and I took off the engine mount after the picture. Goal was to do water pump with timing cover completely off so I could check chain alignment.


Then I thought--why not do the chain while I am at it. My 98 SE has 190K miles.

won't finalize decision until tommorrow. I'll post pics if I do

Probably pretty hard to do it with the engine still in. I did the water pump, that was tricky enough, I can't imagine doing the whole chain like that, not even sure if it is possible.

I have removed everything. the ps pump hose, the engine mount, the altefnator and the compressor (still connected) but hanging by wire. I think it can be done, once the crank pulley and engine mount and ps hoese and belt and alternator and compressor mounts are out of the way,
a lot of real estate is available.

Your wasting your time.
The chain doesn't go bad. Replace the tensioner if anything.
There are VQ's on the road with over 350,000 miles on original timing equipment.

+1. Don't waste your time unless the o-rings behind the timing cover are leaking bad, don't make that effort.

I agree with changing the tensioner, maybe the chain guides too.
