Low gas light flashes.

Ive noticed that my low gas light has never come one solid. When I get low it will come on during acceleration, and stay on progressively longer.

Im assuming the light is activated by a float in the front of the tank, and when I accelerate the gas moves to the back.

My question is how long can I let it stay on? When it starts blinking do I need gas, or do I not even need to worry till it stays on solid?

When it first comes on, there is around 2-3 gallons left. But I don't really trust it so I try to fill up around 1/4 tank

ive found 1/4 is a good safe spot with these cars, its better to not stress the fuel pump. plus you may start sucking up crap in the bottom of the tank tis nooo good. i try to not need to add more than 15 gal at a time MAX tank cap is 18.5 i think.

Yeah My infiniti used to blink but then again i almost never let it run that low. With my Maxima i never let the gas go below 1/2 tank because I'm picky like that and you never know when you wont be able to fill up again

My light stopped working for some time now and need to replace the sending unit at some point. The needle will go down way past E and touch the bottom of the circle and then catch itself and come back up. I usually drive until I see the line going slightly below the E mark and that's when I look for a gas station.

I've never even seen my gas light come on, and it has gotten to "E" before, but never past that. I guess the light comes on after the "E" on my Max

You need gas when the gas gauge goes down twards the "E" mark.

I've heard that there's a reason why they call those warning lights idiot lights.
This thread now defines the reason...
