A?C compressor wheel is locked.. any suggestions?

ok well i finally got my car to start today and i drove once back and forth down my street (dead end) and when i pulled in i noticed a lil smoke so i figured it was burning some surface oil well when my wife got home i started it to show her it was running and heard a horrible screeching sound like a over tight belt.. so i turn off the car i got to looking for possible problems and find out that its the a/c compressor wheel thats locked up i cant get it to turn with my hand and the belt was just melting onto it so is there anyway to un-seize that compressor wheel or am i going to have to go get another compressor ? please help and thanks for your continuing support through my car battle lol

Glad you got your car running today... But I don't know to much about A/C compressor other than you could by pass the compressor with a smaller belt until you can get that taking care of or someone suggest a better solution for you guy.... Since you got it running you don't want that holding you down right!!!

You can get a new belt part no# 350k4 and that will run you alternator

thanks man i appreciate the help thats what i was thinking im going to try to disconnect power to compressor tomorrow to see if i can get it to spin(if it spins with power off then its the a/c compressor clutch i think) but i told my wife.. we still have air just not cold air and at least now we have a running car im just glad that i didnt buy the ecu i was gonna order tomorrow.. lol all i did to get it started was replace the battery terminals and put a 4 gauge ground wire to the tranny housing and had a good battery on it, hoked up the battery and it cranked first time

Your A/C clutch bearing is seized up. You need to bypass the compressor with a smaller belt for the time being until you get it replaced. If you don't your belt will burst and you have no charging to the battery. Either you replace the bearing, get a new compressor, or search the classifieds and get a used one.

Im at work, so I cant look at the FSM, but IIRC the bearing rides between the shaft and pulley. If the bearing was simply seized, the pump would just turn. Its possible the bearing and pump are both hosed. Inspect for old belt fragments caught in the clutch, could also be rusted together. But I do believe your pump is toast.

the bearing actually slides over a cylindrical piece of the compressor housing. only the clutch plate attaches to the shaft. therefore a siezed bearing would cause the pulley to lock up.

however this doesn't mean it's the bearing. the clutch could indeed be siezed as well as the internal pistons, while the bearing itself is fine. but if that was the case you'd likely be in for a new pulley and bearing anyway (cuz it is half of the clutch mechanism). you should be able to test for this by attempting to spin the clutch plate. you should be able to spin it with key off. if you can't then you have some combination of seized clutch, or bearing, or pistons, or all of the above.

as other posts said - bypass the compressor for now while you figure it out.

what's the production date of your maxima? let me know so I can give you the right part#. the years on this car are weird for a/c compressor and lines.

cool. you'll need a 92600-0L701 (or 702, maybe even 703, but not sure on this one). i have a compressor (702) with a bad bearing for sale, if you're interested in changing the bearing yourself (doesn't look like too bad of a job).
