Shocks/Struts suggestions ....

My I35's front shocks/struts seems to be going bad (I can hear clanking/double clanking) everytime there is a bump or a dip.

Do you guys recommend replacing them with stock ones or aftermarket ones ? if so which ones ?

THanks.

I just replaced all around with KYB GR2s all around and like the ride as the rears in my car were bottoming out bad. Still have a small clunk in the front, but may be from bad motor mounts; it's a work in progress.

Last owner of the car replaced rears about 80k miles ago with Monroes that were already shot. Fronts looked like the factory ones... with 220k miles on them so I replaced them and the front mounts while I was at it.

If you're doing it yourself, I found the best deal at my local Advance Auto Parts by using an online coupon (from a maxima.org ad BTW) and picking up in the store.

Not sure what brand you'll be recommended if you go to a shop, all the ones around here seem to like Monroe.

Good Luck!

I'm in the same boat as you after going from a Tokiko illumina 4 way setup to all stockers... The stockers are toast at 62k and about to be replaced.. If you're lowering at all add Illuminas at least. The adjustments are a nice way to customize the feel you want.. I'm swapping in Maxipad SE springs (less float than our luxury's) with stock SE fronts, and Illuminas for the rear.. Tightening the rear should keep the car planted better at all speeds.

Sorry to hijack an I35 thread, but I have an
I30 and want to lower my car about 1.5-2".

Is there a drop spring you guys recommend that keeps a comfortable ride?

Im in the same boat as you except I have already taken action. Try the Eibach Pro Kit, lowers the exact amount you specified. It has a million mile warranty and the overall reviews have been very positive. Might want to get an alignment kit with it though because from what I hear camber CAN be thrown off, so I ordered oine jsut in case. Order through tire rack instead of through the company, its $100 less. I ordered mine today in fact. Can't wait to put them on

Oh, just stock shocks, although I would recommend getting aftermarket shocks as my shocks are really old and i am risking the chance of blowing them out. KYB AGX or Tokico Illuminas seem pretty good. I don't have enough for either right now...

Are you going to replace the coil springs while you are at it?

I want to replace my struts soon, but not sure if I should do springs at the same time. If a coil spring is not rusty or broken, should it need replacement?

Typically the springs don't need replacing. Shock absorbers are the ones that need replacing, as well as bushings, etc.

If you want to keep the springs at stock height, then I wouldn't replace them. 99% of the reason why people replace their springs is to lower the car.

Well are you going for a whole new suspension setup? I know Cattman Perf. offers a package that has Progress Springs (Drop: 1.7 front 1.5 back) with KYB AGXs for around 500. Its also something to consider

Well I personally can't say so for I have no knowledge of it giving a stock ride feel, but I'm sure there are couple org members that have such a setup. You can even google for the reviews.

Ha sounds like you really value ride quality.

Ive gone through 3 sets of suspension since ive owned my i30 and ill have to say, spring and struts for our cars arent that great. I went through ksports in 04, then in 06 i went to tein stech on maxima se factory struts. I went to tokico struts and since 08 I now have tein SS coilovers. The coil overs brought the stock feel back but when u lay into the suspension, you feel the superior performance of coil overs. Ive spent over 5 grand on suspension alone. I would do it right the 1st time considering your going to spend 5-600, you might as well spend 1200 for the coil overs. Youll never look back.

I bought ksport in the beginning and learned my lesson about "cheap coilovers". If your gonna do it, do it right. I would go with teins or jic-magic.

I replaced the front with KYB GR-2 and rear with Monroe Sena-Trac recently. Feel some improvement but not significantly. I guess my old struts were just worn (84k)but not bad yet.

Why would you do that? I'm not criticizing, just wondering because I am trying to figure out a suspension setup and those are both on my list.

just replaced my front struts on my 2001 I30 and couldnt be happier
i went with the FCS full assembled "kit".

Amazon.com: FCS 1331591L Complete Strut Assembly: Automotive Amazon.com: FCS 1331591L Complete Strut Assembly: Automotive

they were approx $108 each

they are not top of the line but didnt want to spend a ton of money

took me about an hour to install, and recommend a front end alignment after.

i'm happy!
