What RPM is too high to set cruise control at or drive at for that matter
Reason I ask is this is now the second transmission I have had from Nissan that has blown and wont go into over drive. So at 60 mph I hit 3,000 RPM. We are going on a trip this weekend where the speed limit is 70 mph and that puts me at about 3,600 RPMs locked on cruise. Is that too high to drive at say for 150 miles straight?
Please skip the get a new tranny talk I'm working on it but I don't have $1,000 for used shipped and install. Pisses me off this would be my 3rd effing tranny. G-Damn Nissan.

The engine can handle it, but I would avoid driving long distances with transmission problems like that. I'd be more concerned about the distance than the speed. Also, you're going to see some pretty crappy gas mileage driving in 3rd the whole way.

Steady, high RPM rates are not going to harm an engine because it's not being abused. Stop and go traffic at 1-2k RPM is actually harder on your engine. Unless, of course, you put it to the floor and run it WOT throttle the whole way...Man does it take a toll on gas mileage, though.
Its not third it will go to 4th as I understand but not over drive. Do I make sense? I can count the shifts up to 4th gear but then it stalls and wont go any further.
I've set my cruise at 80-85 for 80-90 mile highway runs, which puts the engine at 3-3.5k RPMs and had no issues.

I've run my Max pretty hard on the highway and have yet to hear any complaints from it...knock on wood.
Just make sure all your fluids are topped off.

Drove my Chevelle from Phoenix to Dallas, back to Phoenix and then back to Dallas with 4.11 gears, so I was at 3400 rpms at 60. Only thing it hurt was my wallet because I got 9 mpg.
A VQ35 should be able to handle that and get better mileage.
