new bearing or entire hub?

I need new wheel bearings, and was wondering if I should replace just the bearings or the entire hub? I have a buddy that can pack the new bearings so that wont be a problem, if I go that route. My reason for asking is, it would save me ~$300 just to do bearings.

I just replaced the bearings. Hubs where fine.
If you have someone to press the bearings in and out for free, that will save $60-$80.

it really depends on how much bearing and hub are baked together.. if you buddy can easily seperate them then i dont see any issues in resuing the hub (at least i have)...
i suggest have one hadly (i.e. if you dont use you can return)

Unless your tire/wheel has been wobbling about [i.e. I drove my car when the bearing was bad and it got to the point where it ate the hub], I don't see the point in replacing the hub assembly.

which hub are you talking about? if it's for the rears, it's one assembly hub and bearing. Also if you're talking about the front, then you can just replace the bearing.

its the front. Thanks for the info. peeps. My buddy works at Ford, and has access to a press, says he's done it a few times. It just started on my trip to bowling green the other day, so hopefully the bearing will come out easily

I've done several on three different cars and once I replaced a bearing and thought the hub was OK. It wasn't and then I had to do it all over and replace the bearing again and the hub. I'll never do a bearing without a hub again. One thing that makes it easier using a new hub is you don't have the pry the inner race off of the old hub.

But when you are broke, $80, sounds a hell of a lot better than $400

From experience...
Get both the hub and the bearing.

I thought I could just do the bearing and ordered one from a vendor on this site.
Got into the job, replaced the bearing and the FACTORY hub was too big. HMMMMMMM says I.
Went to nissan and got a new factory bearing. went to press the hub in and guess what.... now the hub has play and it's too small. seems I let it go for too long and it wore down.
So while at nissan I needed to get the factory hub assembly so I could finish the job.

What should have been easy turned into a major financial outlay and I went through almost a bottle of tylenol trying to get the factory worn hub into an aftermarket bearing. It just didn't go.
Order the bearing and hub at the same time. Replace at the same time.
save yourself the headache and trouble.
Trust me.

the vendor was really good about it, and they ended up refunding the cost of the bearing for me. Seems that the aftermarket stuff has a different inside diameter than factory. Who would have thought. not me.
