Maxima only starts when I give it gas.

I searched, and read a lot but decided to make a post anyway.

I can't find a tutorial to clean throttle body, the one in the faq didn't work.

My problem is this:

When I turn the key the car tries to start but will fail unless I push the gas, and let it rev up a few times, onces it starts its good, idles fine and everything.

It's worse if I am low on gas.

Once I crank it the fist time of the day, I can turn it off, and start again with a little lag, but I don't have to press the gas.

I've replaced the fuel filter, from reading posts, I don't really think it is the pump.

The throttle body could be dirty, but couldn't find the tutorial to clean it.
The other thing I found was that it could be the Fuel Pressure regulator, gonna look for a tutorial on that.

So, has anybody experienced a similar issue, or have any ideas, or things I should do. Thanks

To clean the TB, go to a auto store, and buy air intake cleaner for TB/MAF. Take the sucker off, and spray here inside and out, let it dry, and your done. I have no idea of ur problem, but would take the hose off the fuel filter, and turn the key to "on" and see if fuel squirts out, and if it doesnt, then you know its the pump.

Don't see why you think its throttle body its definetly a fuel problem change the regukator and see what happens.

I'd clean the TB first. If that doesn't work change the FPR and see if that works.

hows your fuel filter? if the pump is doing its job but the filter is clogged it may take a couple tries to get the fuel to the manifold. try this; turn the key till all the gauge lights come on: oil, ses, battery etc. do this two or three times then crank it if it fires up you need a filter. if not; pull the vacuum line off the fpr if fuel squirts out replace it. if not try to start the beast with the line off, the lack of vacuum slams the diaphragm shut giving you full fuel pressure.DO NOT THROW PARTS AT IT. report back your finding. GOOD LUCK!

i just re-read your post and noticed that you already replaced your filter. well i guess thats not the problem then huh. clean your throttle body thats a good place to start and if the throttle plate is not fully shut it can cause all sorts of problems. its fairly simple. four bolts, two coolant lines, and air box stuff make sure you have a 6 inch extension unplug the connectors for the iac. its kinda hard to explain with no pictures but im not reall computer savvy. sorry

IACV. I didn't install one after my swap and had to gas it until it warmed up, once it warmed up it was fine. Try replacing IACV, you can get one from JY pretty cheap.

+1

The AAC (auxiliary air control) valve within the IACV slides open during start up. The plastic peice was broken off from the magnetic valve on my AAC so it couldn't slide open to give it enough air to start up. I had to hit the pedal to give it more air.

I installed a new IACV I got from www.courtesyparts.com for $138 and it has started fine since then.

I'm also dealing with the same thing, cleaned the throttle body, IACV, MAF, and changed the fuel filter last night.

Did the FPR solve your problem?

I also I have a bit of an exhaust leak before my muffler I'm going to attempt to fix tonight, could that be affecting my starting issue? I didn't think so but figured I'd mention it.

The starter is as relevant to a fuel problem as subs are to braking....hahaha

Give it gas to start

Did you fix this problem?

After a long battle with an intermittent problem (died after 20-45 minutes of running - turned out to be a leaking upper intake gasket) - I now have to use the gas pedal to start the car, more so when it's cold outside. Car runs great otherwise... finally.

two people said that the problem was worse when the fuel level was low in the tank- what does that indicate?
1. trash in the tank (but then it would/should not go 75 on the interstate would it?

2. or less head pressure (of fuel) on the fuel pump inlet??
How diagnose?
HAve Many people removed the fuel pump assembly from the tank?
Lots of trash?
My car does this- turns over longer before starting, when below 1/4 tank

Still haven't fixed this, proabably gonna clean out the TB soon, and replace the FPR, but another piece of info that I gathered is that, it does start better / quicker, if I turn the key on but not to start for about 10 seconds or so before I start the car.

I just cleaned my throttle body this weekend, had the same problem as you, PROBLEM SOLVED! Just remove the hose clamp on the intake hose at the throttle body, move the intake out of your way and spray the TB cleaner in to the TB and butterfly, scrub with toothbrush and wipe out with rag, 10 minute job.

so when you turn the key to on, but dont actually start the car, and wait about 10 seconds the car fires right up? If so, sounds like this is letting the car build up fuel pressure..... FPR
