Gas backing up out of tank....

Today in my 02 se i was fueling up and the gas kept coming out of the inlet pipe.. I pulled the nozzle of the pump out and pumped it where as i could see the fuel coming out of the pump itself. As i was fueling, within a few seconds, i could see the gas come up to the top of the inlet pipe then drain back down.. I have the ses for the purge valve that is on the charcoal canister and i wanted to know would this cause this to happen?

CMAX, read the FSM, there's some info in there on your problem. I glanced across it as part of the EVAP reading I've been doing recently, don't have specifics, but if you hit the FSM, section EC, go to EVAP, it addresses what you're describing.

Specifically check page EC-42. That has the diagnosis procedure for diagnosing your EVAP system.

As a secondary note the FSMs have a TON of information in them I suggest keeping a set on both your computer and your phone if it can read PDFs.

Note: IDX.pdf is the Index for all the manuals. Go there first.

Im reading over this stuff and it looks like my faulty canister is giving me the problem. My ses light is on due to the evap valve being toast but is there something i can disconnect to get fuel in my car until i can get this fixed?

the canister is not causing your fill-up overflow. Nor is the purge valve. Those items are only in play when the engine is running to suck the fumes out out of the gas tank. Maybe they have been damaged as a result of the fill-up problem, but they are not causing the problem.

What you are experiencing is that when you fill the gas tank, the air inside has to escape as you pump the gas in. The air's normal escape path is blocked and the air is trying to come out through the filler pipe as the gas is going in.

There is a small pipe running up along the side of the filler tube that is for the air to escape. It vents into the filler tube near the top. You'll have to check and see if this tube is blocked.
