Dad removed the rear ABS sensor for later repair?

In trying to fix the "short-circuit" right rear ABS sensor on our '01 i30, our "mechanic" dad removed the sensor and he is going to try to repair it later. In the meantime, he is telling us it's OK to drive, but the weather is bad and it's raining hard. My concern is that with the sensor removed, it will get wet inside the ABS rotor housing, and maybe even the female wire harness. Is my concern valid, or will it not cause any damage? I looked at some of the pictures in the Shop Manual, and it looks like it might need to stay sealed.

Chime In, so I can show him this thread if in fact I am right.

Thanks

I'd find some way to keep it plugged. If you get dirt in there, it may cause the ABS sensor to spaz when you reinstall it. Not saying you couldn't clean it out, but you can't be too sure.

Do you know where the short is located? I'd say if you do, cut the wire at the point (you'll be fixing it later, right?) and cap both ends with some electrical tape to keep the wire from becoming damaged by the elements.

Regardless of a short or broken/cut wire, at least you'll keep the rotor housing and female connector safe from any elements.

I would at least tape up the electrical connection... Plugging the hole?? with the heat generated, would have to be something metal. Not a big worry there, but its gonna have to be cleaned out before reinstall, probably the ring too...

Thanks for the replies guys. I put a heat gun to the ABS sensor hole, on low setting, for a few minutes then let it cool down and breathe. Then I put the new sensor in and the ABS and TRAC systems are working again.
