Question about heated steering wheels?

Ok so my question about the steering wheels is does the function gradually turn off. I absolutely love this feature but I feel that when i turn it on after a while it does not stay on. I mean the light for the function shows it on but the wheel doesnt stay hot. Is this normal?

Yes, this is normal. The steering wheel goes through heating cycles where it gets hot then the heating element cuts off. After a while, the heat comes back on and the process starts all over.

thanks bro now I wont look like an idiot when it goes to the service department on thurs. So another stupid question tho, is it normal for the car to make a ping/poppin sound when the car is turned off. it sounds like its coming from the hood. I thought i read somewhere that this is due to the heat shield or something like that. is this normal as well, just tryin to address everything while the car is still under warranty.

Yup, normal also. It is just the metal contracting as it cools down.

Boone nailed this, as usual. As added info, this snapping and popping is most pronounced when the car is new. After two years of driving my baby, this noise is barely audible any more, even after a stiff drive on a hot day.

I've noticed that if you move your hands all around the steering wheel when its heated to even out the hot spots, it will stay on longer.

Its something when it goes off after your used to it, feels like your grabbing a piece of ice.

There are lots of options I can take or leave, But I have known beyond any doubt for over seven years that I will NEVER again own a vehicle that does not have a heated steering wheel. Mine stays on from around mid-October until around mid-May.

If you live long enough to be my age, you will know exactly what I am talking about.

I only wish I didn't have to turn it on every time I get in the car. [/whineoff] It's great.

I think mine gets too hot to the touch sometimes. I wish the switch had a High and Low setting, rather than a Off or On.

I have wished that same thing since I first used mine on my '04 SL. I feel Nissan went a tad far with automating this particular device. I agree with Norm Peterson (another maxima.org poster) that it can be nice to be allowed to use our own brains at times.

But I'll take what I can get. I'll never forget all those decades of knowing I had hold of the steering wheel, but was not able to feel it, or even get a firm grip, because my hands were like two blocks of ice. I tried dozens of types of gloves, but nothing helped.

I had decent circulation when I was younger, but somewhere along the way, probably around age 60 or 70, things changed. Just one of the thousands of things that gradually change as we get older.

I agree with you that now I will have a heated steering wheel in every car I own going forward. It is so nice to not have to wear gloves or alternate holding my hands in front of the vent to ward off frostbite. It definitely can get really hot sometimes, but keeping your hands moving all around it can keep it evened out and running longer. I also noticed it shuts off after a while, usually by that time the entire car + me is warmed up.

Heated steering wheels? I've never even heard of this. I'll definitely be looking into this on my next car purchase.

This is the first car that I have had with a heated wheel and I love it. Comes in handy when temps get into the teens.

Quite honestly I saw that as part of the option, but never thought I would use it. Let me tell ya I was wrong!! That thing is great. It warms up so fast. By the time its nice and warm, my seat heater is warming up, and when its warmed up the car's heater is warming up. It is great!!!

we really are spoiled with the options on the Maxima. My first car had absolutely zero things to make me comfortable. Manual windows, locks, no AC no power brakes no rear defroster (hey can I get a rag to wipe the window down?)
It did have an automatic three speed tranny though lol

yeah i work with real estate agents who drive all BMW, Lexus, Benz etc...every time any of them gets in the Max they say "WOAH I had no idea Nissans were this nice". Needless to say, one of them owns a 7th gen now too.

My wife uses the heated seat over half the year, while I use the individual driver seat air conditioning most of the year. It is great to be able to heat one seat and cool the other at the same time.

I have absolutely no circulation in my gnarly old hands, so use the heated steering wheel all but the hottest summer months. I also had the heated steering wheel in my '04 SL. But my 5th and earlier gen Maximas did not have heated wheels, and when the weather turned cold, I had to let my wife chauffeur me around. That took some of the fun out of owning a beautiful Maxima.

I just got a 2013 maxima and i was tryin to figure out what this button is lol. I live in california and have never needed a heated steering wheel so I'll try it out in the winter, but I doubt i will use it often. I've never once said damn I wish there was a steering wheel warmer lol. I do however LOVE that my seat has a seat cooler and wish my passenger side had it too.

The heating element automatically cycles on and off to maintain a temperature of approximately 70 F. When it reaches this temp, it cycles off until it reads lower again.
