I have 2000 max with about 160k miles on it. it been giving me some hard starts recently until today it turns over but doesnt run. I want some ideas so i can continue trouble shoot. during cranking i get insanely loud back fire. the car has headers and 2.5 pipe all the wato back with no cat or resonator. the car has been running great except for starting issue. i am going to see if i can do a compression test....
this is what i have done so far.
I have header none of the o2s work. those are the only codes im getting.
new spark plugs i bought today
fuel pressure test came out good
welded a crack in the header
checked all coil packs
check to make sure cam shaft is turning(tought timing chain broke)

I have checked all ignition coils, sensors, fuel system, etc. I believe my timing chain has problems(broken guide, tensionizer). I have proper compression, proper fuel pressure, and proper voltage.

If you still have the same codes change out the sensor again. Perhaps you got a bad sensor? Did you put in an OEM sensor, or one from autozone/pep boys?

 

I replaced the first crank sensor by pully. today im going to replace the one by tranny.

UPDATE: Turn out its a timing belt/ guide issue. Timing is off. Ill post picts on removal

The timing chain shouldn't have any problems unless the tensioner went belly up ...

but thats usually a case of lack of oil changes or sludge.

since our tensioners are hydraulic

Bummer..what was root cause of the timing chain issue? Tensions toast, or lack of oil?

 

Since I bought my car It has been taken car off meaning oil changes+ a lil lucus, i removed that butter fly thing in the manifold. I drive it like it was supposed to be driven hard. its like this drive hard pay hard. my tensione and a guide broke im making a lil tutorial i post pics as soon as i can

 

after car is fixed gonna trade it with some cash for fx50

 

Ouch...well it happens. I doubt your "hard driving" had much to do with it. It will just eventually wear and break.

Did you notice any engine chatter when you started up at all prior to having major problems? This is usually a sign with an issue going on with the timing chain.

 

Yes I did here some chatter about a month before. It got louder in time. I knew it was timing chain rattle. My friend had the same rattle on his 72 datsun
