99s were the first year for NATS so yeah, transponder key is needed. Pricing can vary really. Call CL locksmiths and ask for quotes.

yep yep, gotta get that chip... i was at courtesy parts the other day and a lady needed a new key for her altima... same deal with the chip and all, but after it was said and done, they quoted her 130 for programing and new key n such... pretty much WIN if you get it under 100. GL finding them cheap though.

oh, and the funny part, she just wanted a new key because the keyring part broke and it wouldnt stay on her chain any more lol that sucks *****...

I got a 99. The key loop was broke on both of the keys I had. Ended up drillin a hole through the plastic part of the key in order for it to be attached to my key chain. But I admit it was a stupid idea that could've costed me a set of keys if I drilled through the transponder. At the time I didn't know it had one in the key until after the fact. Guess I got lucky.

The chip is located in the one of the corners closest to the ignition switch, opposite of the key ring. You can drill anywhere you want along the top edge.

my 99 had the security light come on while driving home from 4 hours away, it ended up costing me 80 bucks for a new key and to reprogram my original key at a local locksmith

Yea ive drilled through my key before also, just drill on the opposite side where the chip is.... or if youre a perfectionist....just buy a new key...really the money we all spend on moddin our cars and people complain about the price for a key....i mean really....its only 100 bucks give or take...just spend the money and do it right...my current key is the same way...broken off at the ring mountin area, going in a week to get a new one as im not a fan of possibly losing my key...

I love programing these style keys, Easiest flat hour you can make, but what you(or anyone for that matter) could try doing to save some money is go to your Nissan dealer and kick the **** with a couple of the techs. If they are cool you can just buy a new key and ask them to program it for you. Since that year is all the same generic NATS code it takes 5 min to program(only because Consult takes so long to load lol).
