Rear Brake Caliper rattle

Going over bumps I'm hearing a rattle sound coming from the back. When I brake going over the same bumps the sound goes away. I checked the rear calipers, and all the right parts are there. It doesn't seem that anything is missing...shims and what not. The bolts are as tight as I can get them both on the caliper brackets and the caliper to the pins. But, the calipers have some play in them where they are bolted to the pins. They can move a little by hand. I recently about 3 months ago had re-manufactured calipers put on by a Dodge tech I know. I trust his work. Any idea what could now make this rattle sound back there? With everything being tight I don't feel its a safety thing, but it is annoying.

It may just be your exhaust bouncing around. Check that out.

The exhaust wouldn't quiet down when the brakes are applied over bumps. Plus, when I was taking off the passenger side rear wheel I could hear the sound when I gave the wheel a hit with my foot to release it from the hub.

I don't know if non-lubed pins would cause that kind of noise, but perhaps the pins were not re-lubed when they put the caliper back together. Another thing I can think of are the pad retaining clips; they tend to secure the pads when the piston is not pushing them against the disc.

Here's an update. I took the passenger side rear caliper off to inspect everything. Everything was there. Nothing was broke. All the bolts were tight. So, I lubed everything up that wasn't touching the rotor with high temp brake grease. Pins, around the pad retaining clips, back side of pads, and back side of shims for good measure. Put everything back together and took it for a drive over a bumpy road. The rattle sound is gone. I'm glad it wasn't an expensive fix, but I have a funny feeling I'll be doing this re-lube job again in a few months. Time will tell if the rattle stays away.

Good to know the rattle is gone. On the back of the pads I thought we were supposed to apply something like that blue gluey stuff that comes in small packets (can't remember name now), so they stick to the piston and the opposite side of the caliper. I'm not sure if high temperature grease would have the same long time effect.

you're talking about is a high-temperature, synthetic grease(often called brake lube/grease).

I don't think you can "lube" pins with that sticky stuff. The stuff I'm talking about is called "Disc Brake Quiet" by Permatex.

Oh, got it. You're using that stuff. The stuff I use works for lube as well as having anti-squeal and corrosion resistant properties. It's also Permatex brand. I believe it's called Ultra Disc Brake Synthetic Lube. Something like that. I'd go out to the garage to confirm, but it's still over 100°F outside and I'm feeling lazy.

I'm not sure the brand I used. I had to get some oil and a filter at the parts store today, so I just grabbed 2 packets of brake grease that came in a silver package. Whatever I used it worked. I'll keep you all posted as to whether the rattle sound stays gone for good.

Resurrection time....pictures below

as i had my car safetied we looked for the source of the rattle, definitively brakes. the bolts are on tight, but the caliper still sits loose on the bolt unless brake pressure is applied.

How do i dampen this sound without replacing the caliper?
Is this the same rattle you guys fixed with lube?

bolt is tight, but bushing or something is loose unless braking pressure is applied

rattle comes from this part being loose on the bolt that holds it, even when bolt is correctly torqued

I had to replace the caliper mount. The part the bolts go into. Mine apparently warn and when I replaced my calipers I got the banging sound over bumps. New bolts and the mount and all is good now.

ah, just the mount itself? thats better than the whole caliper itself!
to confirm this is the part you replaced: http://www.cardone.com/Products/Prod...=141536&p=rock ?

Also...
this part: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...nid=511&jpid=2

would that remove the rattle? or does that not affect it?

Is this involved: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...nid=513&jpid=0 ?
