Town car vs Maxima ... Better Engineered?

this morning as I was drinking my coffee and reading come of the headlines on yahoo I came across this article

Tim Layne 2 months ago
Have some comments on american vs. japanese cars. So here is a 4000 lb lincoln town car that gets 27 mpg hwy vs a 2700 lb nissan maxima getting 25 mpg on the hwy......so which has the better engineering? Also when have you ever seen a classic honda or nissan.......they all rust and fade away for sure...................

That article is a joke right? Yahoo always has these dumb articles with decieving titles then I read them and they end up bring BS.

Tell TIm Layne to bring his 2000 Town Car vs. My 2000 Maxima then we'll see whats better engineered

The only reasons there is a ton of classic American cars is because we're in America this guy is obviously an idiot, when I was in the Middle East the only classics that existed were mostly German cars (VW, Audi, Mercedes, BMW). I bet if you go to Japan the most classics that exist are Japanese cars.

I'm not a region warrior. America has a lot of great cars. But the town Car is not among them.

Ford's made one good sedan in the last few decades, and it's the Crown Vic, a heavy slug that lasts forever.

Exactly. My grandfather had his Lincoln TC yeeeears, that thing was nice, rode smooth, etc. You know what it didn't do? Get 27mpg

And that guy wasn't too bright (and someone even addressed it), there ARE classic Japanese cars. It may not be a whole lot but we have to remember: Japanese quality was cheap once-upon-a-time. Their market share was tiny when American muscle was strong.

Our American companies have had handfuls of decades of a head-start. The Japanese caught-up and then surpassed (quality-wise). It seems American cars are trying to come back and have been making strides, but the Japanese have reigned in the last two decades of quality.

First of all, let me start off by saying that for the most part, Japanese and American cars MPG are the same. Ive driven both. I'll give you an example. I drove a Stratus (with a Mitsubishi engine but nevertheless) and it gets the same mileage as my I30. Difference? I sit in leather now and I dont deal with Mitsubishi crap anymore. Oh, and BOSE! I can't forget that.

I've been around many people that own both Japanese and American. My friend has a Cavalier and another one has a Corolla... both are getting 30's in the highway and high 20's in the city. One has plastic all over and the other has cheap fabrics. Nothing to go around and brag about. Same econobox just a different name.

The only time they really make a difference is when we're talking about distinct cars. GTR vs Corvette... 2 different styles 2 different views.. take your poison.

This whole comparison is stupid. FWD Impala VS Maxima would have made a better comparison. He's a Ford guy? Then Taurus VS Maxima. The Town Car was designed to be big plush and SLOW. 27MPG? Hahaha if he's being pushed! But 22MPG? I believe that. The Maxima has grown over the years but its not a freakin limo! Nor is it BOF. I wish it was BOF so I could buy one and throw the Q45 engine in there or something.

Also, lets not forget the "classics" that we see now are only such because they weren't trash and bland. When's the last time you saw a Pinto? NEVER! If the Japanese (excluding Datsun) had brought their non econobox cars here, then we'd see both. Simple as that. But no one gave a damn about a Civic before "VTEC" and no one thought "This is one hell of a car" sitting behind a Toyota Corona. I see old Datsuns around all the time. Datsun Z cars that is. Why? because they weren't a to b cars like the B210 and so on. I bet you its the same in Japan, in Germany, in whenever you go. If I went to Japan I bet I wouldnt that 1968 a to b car "so and so" is fond of so much but I will damn sure see a bunch of Silvias and Skylines or Supras and Celicas. It's just how the game goes. If the Impala was a box, then no one would care for it. Even though it literally was shaped as a square at one point, it still had class. People talk just because they see something and assume. I've been around all types of cars to know better.

I would slightly disagree with that statement, i own two corollas one is a 96 and the other is a 98 both cars have well over 200,000 miles on the clock the 96 is used daily by my brother, he is a pizza delivery man, so combined the car has over 5 years of city driving and well over 70,000 miles if just delivering services... the only repairs to the car were brakes, ball joints, and recently an engine tune up...
My 98 Corolla LE which also has 215,000+ miles is much more comfortable inside than any cavalier and the quality of the ride in this little box is amazing, I am yet to see a cavalier do 200,000 + miles without going thru a couple of trannys or engines... I just don't think they are build to last, yes they might get the same gas millage but that's where the similarities end..
My best friend purchased a 07 Corolla a couple of years ago, the dealer literally kissed out *** to try to sell us a Cobolt but after comparing the Cobolt to the Corolla the Chevy was just hard on the inside, cheap made, the seats were horrible the ride was somehow ok...

And lets not forget the Fairlady Z32, when the car first came in the 90 car & driver compared it to the Corvette from that era, I would say the only reason why the Corvette "won" was simply b/c the writers didn't want to admit that the little Z basically destroyed the corvette on the track... I will try to post the article if I find it...

It's not even a fair comparison.

The Town Car is a luxury family sedan & lLivery vehicle, while the Maxima is a 4 door sport sedan.

Too funny, the two cars in the driveway right now are the Max and the Rents Town car. Love them both, also my first car was a nice TC!

I've actually have seen them go past 200K. My friend used to have a 96 with the 2.2 that had 240K before he got rid of it. The body was too beat up to invest in that engine. Original transmission and engine. It was a family car. They had it since it rolled off the assembly line in 96. Lasted em till 09. A lot of em on craigslist are also the same. I do believe the 2.4s were more crap than the 2.2s but thats another discussion for another forum.

You know it's funny because my friend went through the same exact situation... but in reverse. 05 Corolla and 05 Cobalt, both sedans. He wanted the coupe but they only had sedans at the time so he test drove the Corolla. Said the dash was the ugliest thing he had saw and it reminded him of a brick. Rock hard plastics and fabrics that give you rugburn on those short wearing days. Truthfully the Cobalt wasn't much better (thing was missing the temperature gauge) but he said the interior was less boring to look at than the "brick" dash of the Corolla. Now me personally, I will say both compacts are utter crap. Theyre bland, dont do much for me. Ive borrowed many econoboxes when I didn't have a car around and all I can say is they all drive and feel the same. They're all bland, they're all boringly styled and they are all myriads of plastic. I can't recall driving a compact I liked other than a SVT Focus.

Ahh the Z32. I always had a soft spot for those. Don't think many people cared for them though as they basically disappeared from my local roads. Then again the DC area is backwards at times.

Total crap. I drove my 1995 maxima with 240k miles on it, with a 100 pounds of tools in the trunk, two grown men in the car, at 70 mph and got 27 mph!!! Oh by the way that engine with 240k miles does not burn any oil between oil changes, with no engine rebuilt. My 16 year old car did not have any rust!
