Aluminum Dash with GLE wood interior???

I have a 97 GLE black interior black leather but I got that darn wood dash and door switches. I was looking @ custom maxima kit and I was wondering about overlaying onto the wood. I was considering taking them off and painting them black and then installing the kit. but I have a din that pops out by the ash tray that is wood. The kit doesnt carry that piece. I could prolly just take out that din or put a EQ in place of it. Anyone with suggestions???

Paint it silver like me. It looks better than a stick-on kit.

Just whatever you do, don't stick a kit over the GLE fake wood! I saw it once and almost barfed. Either trade (there are lots of people who want the GLE "wood", buy the GXE/SE black panels (expensive) or, at worse, paint them black first like you said. I did a combo of all three. Traded a few, bought a few and like you mentioned, I had to paint the pop out tray. You could buy the GXE/SE flip down door storage and give up your pop out tray and the the kit will work. Good luck.

I took my factory wood kit out for the aluminum dash kit

I don't think I will ever take another dash kit off. I couldn't feel my fingers for a week. Those 3M adhesive is really hard to clean up. Jeff aka Shawdow is working on that slide out tray piece for the 1999.

Yes, we are working on that slide out tray piece. Tony, sorry about the delay, I'm not sure why our design guy has had your piece for so long. But it should be done soon, and I'll get it out to you.

molded dash

Are they ever plan on making a molded dash kit? Also to the reply about take the pieces out, by the shifter put a cloth over a screw driver and pop it out, the rest u will have to take your top vents out which they pop out the same way but pop them out from the top, the rest is self explanitory, if you need more details email me

I'm faced with the same prob. I replaced the black peices with wood from a GLE in my 97SE but now I'm thinking about the aluminum kit from Joshiua Tree. I't real aluminum but I cant stick it over the wood so I have to get the black plastic back. What do you guys think. Wood or Aluminum?

mzmtg, what kind of paint did you use? It looks really good in you pics. How does it look up close? Can you tell it's paint? Does it scratch easy?

Re: Re: Re: Re: :o)

They can't make a molded dash kit for the '95-99's. The whole concept of a molded dash kits is so that it fits over the raised parts of the dash like on the 5th gen maximas. Every piece on the '95-99 is recessed and flat on the dash, so there is no way to make a 3D molded kit for that car. It would look the exact same.

Well, your question AS ASKED isn't accurate. To answer exactly as asked, I'd say wood, definately. But what you meant was 'fake GLE plastic "wood" or aluminum?'. In that case, aluminum. I HATE fake anything (wood, people, *****...). That's why the first thing I did was rip out my GLE "wood", get GXE/SE black and buy a REAL wood kit to go over it. My modo is "luxury on the inside, sport on the outside". That's why I want nothing but wood and leather, every power goodie, etc. on the inside. I'm not much for that chrome/aluminum/metal stuff (although it beats fake wood). Anyway, just my opinion. Get what you like. Just, please, I beg you, please, don't stick aluminum over GLE "wood".

P.s. How the heck did you get that 81^F read-out on your instrument panel???!!! You have a '97? Did they start that in '97? Damn, I'm jealous!

Pulease! I would never stick the aluminum over my wood. I agree, I'm not crazy about the fake GLE wood. So now I have to replace it back to the black and put the aluminum over that. My display is a Whistler 3300c custom radar(it also reads temp & batt voltage). You can mount the display anywhere so I disassembled my cluster and put it in there. What a project!

You are THE man! That is just way too cool. Congrats on a job well done and an awesome idea.

p.s. Is that outside temp?

I used several coats of white sandable primer and then several coats of Krylon Metallic Silver and several clear coats...with lots of sanding in between to keep things smooth.

It looks great and hasnt scratched yet. It looks better than a kit because you dont see the edges. Plus the total cost was $8.
