Will our engine come out the top?
The title says it all! Looking to do an engine swap due to mine burning up, going from ~200k to a 49k engine. The last thing I need to know is can our engine come out of the top of the car or does it have to be the bottom? If it will come out the top I can do this no problem. Even if it takes removing some extra stuff that isnt a big deal, just let me know! I tried searching for this but no results! Someone with experience let me know!! Thanks!
Yes it can come out the top. I just did this during the summer. It can even come out through the top with the transmission still attached. Id highly suggest using a load leveler because if you pull it with the tranny still attached youll bring it out at an angle with the motor higher than the tranny.
I did this 2 weeks ago, lifted the motor with trans still attached out from the top. Just like Jnco said, you have to tilt the motor and trans if pulling both out at the same time. I would suggest doing it that way, its much easier (if you have an engine hoist).
i considered separating them myself when i did my swap but getting into the torque converter bolts is a pain if your auto and want to separate them. much easier outside the car. i pulled mine from the top hood of and tilt lever same as the other guys. it is also possible to drop the entire sub frame struts axles all included but way more time consuming but you can literally lift the front end and roll the assembly out.
The first one I ever pulled came out the top and back in the same way. The 30 or so since then have all come out the bottom with no hoist or engine lift. Pull the engine and trans together.
Wouldn't the car have to be pretty high off the ground to get the engine out from the bottom?
