I need to replace the camshaft position sensor in my 99 Maxima. I have heard there's only one in our cars and I was hoping someone could post a diagram of the engine bay with it pointed out to me!

Also, I heard that there may be a recall for this part on our Maxima.. Is that true? Thanks for letting me know!

On the timing cover, just above the belt tensioner.

It's a really easy fix, I remember toying with it when I was replacing my thermostat. Btw, are you experiencing hard starting? I might have to do mine too

 

Im having a hard time starting if thats what you mean. But what Im experiencing is the infamous "Will crank all day, but wont start"... But if it ever does start (which is RARE) it doesnt start hard. It runs just like a champ.

could this sensor cause a dead crank? like turning the key and NOTHING happens? then wait a few seconds in the on position and then it starts? I was just wondering. I know it sounds a lot like the solenoid going bad. I have no experience with this sensor though.

 

^^^^ No. It could be the starter (solenoid or motor) or it could be the ignition switch. But it would not be the cam sensor.

Mine sometimes acts like this. I'll look into my sensor too, did yours throw a code?

 

The sensor was exactly my problem. I replaced it with a part from AutoZone for $59.99. Took out one bolt then snapped the old one out. Undid one of those darn clips that can be kinda frustrating, popped the new one into the clip popped it into the hole for the sensor, then put the bolt back in. All of a sudden, I crank it, and it starts like its brand new! Super easy fix for a relatively cheap price. Thanks for all the tips guys!

Oh yeah, sorry! Mine did throw a code. I dont recall the number of the code, but it threw one. When I took it to AutoZone to get read it read as the number plus "Camshaft Position Sensor"

 

Ok cool, use don't want to replace mine if it doesn't come up. I just took off the negative battery cable so no codes will come up til I hook it up

 

i have the no crank upon turning the key issue. doesnt do anything. im thinking faulty ignition switch except it only does it sometimes. like... if i take the car out for a half hour. then turn it off for like 10 mins to go in a store. come out. turn the key and nothing happens. let the car sit for an hour till its cold. then it starts up fine.

i dont know if its the ignition switch or a problem with the starter/starter solenoid being too hot or something? im going to try a used ignition swtich for now someone said it could be a faulty circuit inside the switch. i know its not an issue of the key cylinder grabbing the ignition switch because the teeth are fine on it. hmm.

never thought about this CamshaftPS though. my problem is so rare too i mean it happens infrequently

 

If a hot engine gives you a no-crank situation, and it works again after cooling down, then I'd suspect something in the engine compartment that is subject to the heat rather than the ignition switch on the steering column inside the cabin. The starter itself is a suspect.

is it not possible for the sensor to fail and not throw a code? i get a crank no start and sometimes a missfire at crank

 

Sounds like a crankshaft pos sensor issue but can be the starter or ignition switch as well.

 

I've been to virtually every repair shop I can find and there are NO repair manual s for a 5ht gen Maxima 2009-2015.

I am trying to replace my camshaft position censors and can't find them on YouTube or anything. Can anyone help me locate?
