Ratcheting kind of noise when starting

I only hear it when starting and it goes away just before I let go of the key. Almost sounds like a ratchet wrench spinning or even an engine dieseling.

Car has 116,000 miles with 14,000 just since Aug last year. I change the oil every 3500 miles and use Nissan for the service. Dino oil, no synth. Car gets 91-93 octane but sometimes 89. I drive 600 freeway miles a week for work and maybe 100 mixed on weekends.

Last service was the 100,000 mile service at the dealer. It's time for the 115,000 service but I figured I try to fix the noise first. The KS was replaced at about 85,000.

The sound seems to worsen the colder it is. When I leave for lunch, I rarely notice it.

Any ideas.

Lastly, should I only buy Nissan parts (o2, filters, etc.) or are the ones from Advance/AutoZone OK?

Do you have an aftermarket starter with 11 teeth? The OEM starter only has 8 or 10 teeth so an aftermarket starter with 11 teeth will cause that noise. I was worried about that noise when I installed the aftermarket 17232 starter from Advance Auto 14 months ago but the teeth on both the flywheel and starter are still sharp.

If you still have the OEM starter then try regreasing the starter.
