Oiled air filters and maf problems survey

How many persons have had issues with their maf after using oiled air filters. I am beginning to think this as being the cause for my stalling problems. I did a search and found too many coincidences.

It's definitely a possibility. After having an oiled K&N, then having MAF issues, I cleaned the MAF (which had the redish oil on it) and switched to a dry flow Amsoil and haven't had issues since.

Try giving you MAF a cleaning.

Maybe you used to much oil? are you supposed to wait a specified time before driving with it? Ive never had this problem before

I've never re-oiled mine, but then again it's been it there for more than a few years ...it always looks very clean so I've never changed it - fram airhog. Maybe it dried up so much it started to flake off and damaged maf...my fault I guess..

Yes, you're supposed to let it dry before putting it back. The screen on my MAF had oil residue from not letting it dry long enough.

I use a dry anyways just so I don't have to mess with it but the waiting seems obvious to me. Probably takes awhile to fully absorb throughout the fibers

I bought my car with a specter oil cone filter. I used the k/n filter cleaner as directed and even let it dry overnight before driving the car. Inevitably I'd still find oil residue on the inside of the maf housing. Even when i used very little oil i would still find residue after 3000 miles.

I just recently bought a dryflow 80mm Apexi power intake filter. I'll never look back to an oil filter again. Not only is the dryflow worry free but it also comes with a nice velocity stack inside the filter.

It doesn't surprise me. What's annoying is if you have an oil based air filter you have to use the oil. Otherwise it won't filter properly. That's why I finally ditched it for the apexi. I was sick of having to constantly clean my maf every time I cleaned the filter.

I switched too Dryflow filters yrs back since oil could cause premature failure of your MAF sensor!

K&N drop in filter killed my MAF within a few months. But since then I haven't had issues. Although I haven't "reoiled" the filter since then either. I do clean it from time to time. No issues since though.

When my MAF failed a few years back one of the first things the Orgers asked me was did I put in a K&N. Seems to be a right of passage kind of thing. But yeah I agree seems like bad design too.

I always jus get a dry cone.

Dont see what the advantage is for using oiled air filter

That's exactly why I got a performance dryflow. No oil bull**** and in tests it actually provided better air flow overall and better filtration without the oil. AEM or Apexi are the top filters.

Maybe Fram is not nearly as good quality wise as K&N

I know some would argue, but I never have seen Fram to be anywhere near the quality as K&N..

really??? i saw a display in pep boys where the fram could be interchanged with the k&n filter and the air flow was much better. i've ran a k&n for 6 years and the first thing they said was not to over oil the filter or it will make the car stall and f up the maf. i always let it dry for a few hours and lightly spray only 1 side before i re-install and she works great.

I've tried very very light oil and even let it dry for 10+ hours and still would end up with problems down the road.

I put a K&N cone filter on my '97 with a short ram about 2 months ago. I'd heard of people have problems with oiled filters wreaking havoc on their MAF's, but I went ahead and did it anyways. Sure enough, 2 months later, the car starts bucking, losing power and stalling. I bought a re-tooled MAF for around $250 at Autozone, put the stock intake back on until I decide on a new filter, and now it runs just fine. Beware of oiled filters. I hadn't even ever cleaned the K&N, I put it on right out of the box with the factory amount of oil on it and it ruined the MAF (even after cleaning it multiple times, I couldn't resurrect it). K&N filters are great, but I'll probably stick to dry filters from now on for my Max.

Just switch to dry air filters. Amsoil, AEM, etc.
