Full exhaust needs test pipe

This is more of a rant post, maybe some informational quality. but whoever decides to do a full exhaust as well as y pipe let me assure you, you will need to either re-use the cat (as i did) or have a 12 inch test pipe handy....needless to say after struggling with all those rusty bolts, stubborn o2 sensors and countless rust particles in my eye, theres no feeling like putting the catback up to where its supposed to connect to the y pipe and laying witness to a 12 inch gap between the 2. im sorry if this info can be found searching but all i do is lurk in the search function...this might be my first official post. but either way... rant switch off.

It's called cat-back for a reason, bud. It's meant to connect to the catalyst, not the y pipe.

Are u sure the gap from b-pipe to y-pipe is 12"? All the test pipes on ebay say 18" long.

And you should have went with the Z32 fuel filter, i just changed mine today after 150k miles. It idles so smooth and they say it lasts longer.

Lol, you do have the perfect exhaust, V2's and 3" pipe. Me personally i like my Stillen rear section. But does your exhaust out-sound your intake since you have no cats? I prefer the CAI growl and may just get a new cat if its too loud, or a resonator.

& got any videos?

Thanks. Im gonna use a test pipe because it has a 2.25" inlet and 2.5" outlet, and weld a 2.5" magnaflow cat in the b-pipe

OBX V1's -> test pipe increaser (2.25" inlet, 2.5" outlet) -> welded to 2.5" cat -> welded to 2.5" resonator -> welded to the rest of the MES 2.5" b-pipe -> Stillen rear section

v1's? no rasp? Whatchu talkin bout willis? I subscribe to the opposite theory where it is best for perofrmance to increase pipe diameter as you go back. My 2.25" cattman->2.25" cat->2.25" resonator-> soon to be 3" MES b-pipe section and cant decide if I want to leave the 2.25" muffler or go straight through

The V1's have a small diameter at the collector to the end, its a little less than 2.25". The test pipe is for the Max and has a 2.25" inlet & 2.5" outlet. So the exhaust will be 2.25" and will increase to 2.5" at the test pipe.

I dont want it to be too loud so i will weld a cat & resonator into the b-pipe where its straight, right after the test pipe...

Opposite theory is what Nissan uses anyways, it works. Best to have the restriction early on and then open up as it goes back. Some say no restriction is best but I tend to think this is the best way for velocity's sake. Especially pre-cat because you need to keep the velocity up going into the cat

Yeah it "outsounds" the CAI. Well most free flowing 3" catbacks would. And as said above, video is in my sig.

Yea i know its better to have the restriction as far up front as possible, but my setup the cat would only be like 12 inches further back, with the test pipe in the spot where the OEM cat was. I was thinking just weld the 3 together, so the b-pipe and test pipe are 1 piece.

test pipe-cat-resonator-rest of bpipe

The reason I want the test pipe first is because of it's 2.25" inlet and 2.5" outlet. I can bolt the y-pipe's 2.25" outlet to the test pipe's 2.25" inlet, then the rest of the exhaust opens up to 2.5". The only restriction is the cat, but its a pretty small one, and a hi-flow.

Because all the test pipes on ebay say 18", but its not an issue anymore, because i decided to integrate the test pipe and b-pipe as 1 piece.

For 97-99 that's probably true. 95/96 have longer B pipe. I installed a Megan cat back for 97-99 which came with short S pipe to bridge the gap.

Yea just found out why... cat (12") + s-pipe (6") = 18"

1 piece exhaust systems are for the birds..........Buy some flanges and 12" of tubing and make a testpipe.....The reason yours is so loud is that you're using 3.5" resonators that maybe only 14" long....I see no braces under the car why not invest in a Magnaflow (12649) 6" round, 18" long muffler and use it as a resonator...I just built a "New Resonator Section" for my 3" Cattman Catback and it's quieter....

All depends on how you pipe and pair the cat, resonator(s) and muffler

I've deigned/utilized Magnaflow mufflers on 4 cars and They're awesome..... one of my systems is over 10 yrs and still sounding good!
