Ok I've tried 4 different times to remove the fuel filter on my Mom's '97 GLE (ABS). I can get the top hose off but no amount of twisting, turning, nothing will get the bottom broken loose.

I've tried everything I can find on here and elsewhere.

I'm kind-of near St. Louis, anyone done this on theirs and have a good technique that works?

I SHOULD MENTION THAT IT IS THE ORIGINAL FUEL FILTER. 157k, 1997 model.
I tried at 60k, 90k and 120k and just now to get it off.

 

you do realize that there is a hose clamp on the bottom right?

I took a thick towel and a rag to get mine out worked great.

metal fuel line and replace.

 

If you can get the bottom hose off, use a pick or a small flatblade screwdriver to separate the hose from the nipple. Personally I would cut and replace the hose.

 

Crimp the holy hell outta the barbed end, its not like you're going to need the old filter.

 

take the fuel pump fuse out, crank the car a couple times. after this the pressure in the hoses should have been released it should be eaiser after that

I ended up breaking the bottom nipple off of mine and then cutting the remaining piece little by little out of the hose. Either way, it's a pain in the ***.

 

I would say twist and pull but seeing that you have the ABS module blocking some of your workspace, I would do what the others suggest to crimp or replace the hose. Just put some oil on nipples of filter before sliding over hose.

 

I have found the trick to getting it off easier is to do it when the engine compartment is rather warm. Like 20 minutes after a good ride. The heat will make the hoses a bit softer and easier to work with.

Or you can get some shears.... Cut the old fuel filter where the nipple for the hose begins.

Use pliers to get the old nipple out of the hose....

It's what I did on my last FF change....

 

It will come off put some elbow grease into it. Make sure you take the hose clamp off also or ur gonna be there all day

 

If I do that then I won't have enough slack on the bottom to allow it to fit back in the filter holder though. Or are you meaning replacing the lower hose altogether?

LOTS of elbow grease has been applied and yea, the clamp has been loosened

Yes. Its is a short bit of hose connecting the filter to the lower hard line. The hose is old enough now it should be replaced anyway. Be sure to use high pressure injection line. Remove the circled clamp and cut the hose lengthwise (yellow line).


Alternatively, you can do what I did. Work a 90* pick between the hose and the filter nipple all the way around to loosen it up. Then use a trim prying tool to PUSH the hose off the filter nipple. Pulling will only make it tighter.
