00 - 03 muffler question

Only difference was that the 02-03 (maybe anniv Ed?) muffler had a nice juicy creamy center that added a few hp.
Or so they say. It has a flange that remains closed at low exhaust velocity and opens to another chamber at higher velocity to reduce restriction at higher rpms. But really, the entire exhaust is horribly restrictive. I don't suggest getting one new either. If you did, you could probably get a whole 2.5" catback system for cheaper.

Just remembered. I've got a used 2003 muffler. But, it's just the muffler and piping without the flange. You would have to get a shop to weld it into place or install some new pipe on the end with a new flange to bolt it up.
To my knowledge they are all internally the same. They are made by Calsonic and have a flapper valve inside them that opens up at higher rpm. That's why at idle exhaust only comes out of one pipe. 00-01 had a stainless tip that wrapped around both pipes whereas the 02-03 did not. The 01 Anniversary had turndowns to clear the rear lip, and the I30 and I35's also have turndowns to clear the lower hanging bumper cover.

The 2001 Anniversary Edition has the same style internals as the updated (2002/2003), this is the style that has a internal valve that allows a more 'open' design under higher flow conditions, this allows for a slight increase in power while maintaining quiet idle/cruise noise.
And externally the only difference is the tips as Tbehr said. The 2002/2003 looking much better, IMO.
All in all, you're best with a 2002/2003 version if you're looking for an OEM replacement.

It's quite easy to tell. When you're standing behind the car, exhaust at idle will come out of the right side pipe, as long as the valve hasn't been rusted out or stuck open. With the car running, put your hand behind the pipes and you can tell. If it's cold out, the condensation will also give it away.

Cool man so you have a Maxima as well or this is your rents?
It's contrary to everything I know and have read about the 00 & 01, so unless yours has been replaced with an AE (2001) or an aftermarket one that has the valve....
But if you're correct and it was equipped that way from the factory, that's big news.

My car is also an SE, so perhaps the variable capacity muffler came with it, and the other models did not, perhaps...
I read about it being a variable capacity and sure enough, exhaust only comes out of one pipe at idle. When you rev it, exhaust then comes out of both pipes.
Here's an archive of a review from Motor Trend in July 1999 around the time the 2000 Maxima came out. In the article it says that it has a variable capacity muffler.
