Last Racing Season with the Maxima

First race was in June, 5 hr drive and my transmission would upshift at 4k in all gears. Couldn't access the Suprastick interface so the weekend was a washout. Found out that one of the serial wires had broken off so it was an easy fix.

13-15 July another 5 hr drive to Elliot Lake. http://www.elliotlakedragway.com/ Friday evening they had a gamblers race with a $50 entry, we got down to 10 when it got dark so we split the purse $100 each. Saturday we had 225 cars in street, I made it down to 3 before losing, another $100. Sunday they had a High Roller Street event only 32 cars could enter $100 ea and $1000 to the winner only. So I got lucky and came home today $1200 richer so not a bad weeekend.

Two more races on 12-14 Aug and 24-26 Aug then its off to the scrap yard and on to preparing the G35 for next season. I'm hoping to win a few more dollars to help pay for the mods. $2200 for a Haltech alone so I need money.

Nope, sorry. I would but my converter is trashed so only stock converter and I am running a stock engine now, no cams etc. I am going to the track this weekend to see if I can hit an 11.99 so I can race semi-pro 12-14 Aug. Not sure how much spray that will take but I am only running low 13's (8.5 1/8th) now in its present configuration. It is running pretty good though, managed 1.9x 60's all weekend on 26" street tires and it was solid ion the 90+ temps, took out a lot of 400+ hp cars . Mega spectators stopped to chat in the pits about the car, fun weekend.

NOOOOO!!! I need go fast parts!!!

Good luck with the rest of your season. So far this year my basically "stock" Maxi has made it to 2 semi-finals and one final. Here in New York the car went a personal best of 9.86@ 73.15mph in the 1/8th on a 92 degree day with a density altitude of 3600 feet.

That ain't gonna come easy, tried it out Wed nite and it ran 14.5 bone stock, so I have a long way to go. However my 02 Maxima did 14.7 stock and it came down to a 13.2 so there is hope. It is a lot more fun to drive than the Maxima but people expect it to be faster.

sad to hear that this is the last season for it but understandable. great job on the wins. hopefully you can bring home a few more trophies and a few more dollars before the max is finally put out to pasture.

have you ever tallied up your winnings with the max?

Just over $20k, this is the only car that I know of that has paid for itself, Don't think that will happen with the G35 but I can always hope. I paid $8k the G but the addons are going to be expensive, I think my list is already $6k and growing.

Its only been the last 5 years that I have been going to higher purse races, before that it was $5-600 max. I've also cut way back and am now running only 4 races but the potential winnings are over $6k at one of them alone. I'm not really into it for money alone but I don't like going to races with only 8-10 cars in a class. The last one had over 200 and when you make it to the top 3 you know you have been in a race.

Pretty much have to stay with the spray to run 11.99, 12-14 and some 14 and slower. I think that would prove difficult running FI especially in the final rounds where you get 1 minute turnarounds.

Any chance I could buy your old converter and limited slip unit when your done? I could use a core to send out and get restalled to 3500 rpm.
On a different note... last Saturday I won in 2 different classes. My first ever event wins. I went 5 rounds for the win in Street Money (.500 sportman tree) and 4 rounds for the win in Open Comp (.500 pro tree)
I was the slowest car in the field but it was an awesome feeling taking out the big boys that normally run Super Pro. First round was against a wheel standing 69 Camaro that run 5.98 in the 1\8 mile @ 114mph. :-)

I would give it to you but the cost to ship would probably be more than its worth.

Ya I hear ya on taking out the big boys, they aren't too happy losing to a 4 door street car.

I replaced it last year with a fresh one and never bothered to do anything to it. However I am going to the track next wed with my Son to try his M5 and see if I can get it the Max to run under 12.0 for my next race (Aug 10-12) so I can double class and run Semi-Pro.

Thats my plan for the G35 next year. Going to up the game a bit and stay out of street class.

I may have to take a 630 mile drive up there and buy what you are willing to sell before you scrap it.

Got rained out the Aug 12-14th race but Aug 24-26 I won the 12.90 class, $250 and a set of M/T slicks, any size I want. Got to semi-finals in Open Comp, winner got $2000, M/T tires and a massive Matco toolbox, ah next year.

Well I was just going to spray like the Maxima but I am leaning towards building a new block and a mid mount turbo or an LSx swap. Still researching.

Gone but not forgotten

Last Fri was the end of the Maxima. She is now scrunched into a square steel block.

I have started to work on the G, but I have until next May or June for the first race so no hurry. Just installing my seats now and installing some gauges etc. i have to wait til I get to Fla in Nov to start buying all the stuff I want. Not planning too much for the engine for next year, just cams, headers, Haltech etc. The following year I am thinking about a built short block and mid mount single turbo from Boosted Performance. My priority for now is the suspension, trans, diff etc. Planning on spraying enough to run the 11.99 class and getting the consistency to a level that I can compete like the Maxima.

I do love driving the G and don't plan on getting rid of any creature comforts, if I don't go fast enough I will just add more power. A/C is not optional and I plan on installing a small resevoir so I can run it in the staging lanes. Heat soak is not an issue, I always run only after the engine is fully warmed up. Usually after the first few rounds of a race you have to be able to run with no cool down so may as well get used to it.

I think the lsx swap give you the best chance or getting into the 11's with no spray

also I think a hr swap and boost would be better than a built block and boost. I thinking since they can handle more power than a de and you can grab another from the yard if something bad happens unlike a built block. Also you won't have to worry about who built my motor, will it be right and etc.

Raced all year with the G35, best time of 13.5, never tried the spray. Not as successful as with the Max at winning, but still did ok. It was more consistent than the Max but driver error and more competition dwindled my winnings.

Time to make a decision, either build the engine, spray, turbo or an LS swap. So what am I going to do? Sell the G35 and do an LS swap into an older car.

After researching for eons I decided on doing up a 6.0 L truck engine. Found an L96 4 hrs away from a 2012 Silverado with 7k on it, looks like new. It has L92 heads like the vette and a cast iron block for strength. When I get the headers, cam, electric water pump etc installed it should be pushing close to 500 whp.

It will be mated to a 4l80e 4 spd auto with a 4k stall and transbrake. I have been looking for a platform to install in and looked at everything from Mustangs to 240sx's. Found a great deal on an 84 Z28 roller, really low mileage with a chassis and rear end that should handle 1000 hp. Never winter driven and no rust anywhere, even came with Weld wheels, Flaming River steering rack, fiberglass hood etc etc.

Not sure if I can get it going for the first race next season but gonna try. Its going to be a fun build, lots of room to work under the hood, no more hamburger fingers.

I have had a lot of fun with the 3.5, met a lot of great people and learned a lot from from this forum. I ain't leaving, still keep up with the news on here and if you think I can help in any way just holler.

Jime

PS It will be my DD too, I am picking up some original wheels this week to make it appear somewhat stock. Still have the G but just finishing returning it to stock before I sell it. I towed this car home last night with a car dolly and the front runners on the road behind my G35, took 2 hrs of nailbiting driving.

Just wanted a quicker car, got spoiled having a 12 sec N/A car. The G is very hard to lose weight with, not like the Max. The only way to make the G faster is with some sort of power adder and when you do that you lose consistency.

This way I can have a 10 sec N/A car and if I want to be like Vin Diesel and run 9's I can spray.

The big bonus is that I can do it without spending any more money than I have in the G35.

The new track I am racing at is 1/8th mile and I want to double class in Sportsman/Mod. Mod is 6.50-7.50 and Sportsman is 7.50-9.0 so I need an 11.80 car to do this.

I have a buddy with an 86 IROC with a 3.9 V6 stock except cam and turbo, he has run an 11.60 with it so these new engines aren't like the old ones. The V8 I have chosen can run way over 700 whp with stock bottom end, so lots of safety margin. Plus now I can run a bigger stall and transbrake.

I fully understand, maxima does spoil you. When I got my g35 it wasn't impressive but a bolton 3.5 in a 3000lbs with leather, heated seats, sunroof and etc will do that.

Not yet, but when I get back from Fl I will start building. Right now I am just doing some interior stuff and trying to get some street wheels so I can drive it on the street.

Sounds like your doin ok Aaron, good luck with the car. I was waiting to see how the converter worked and was going to do one for my G. Now I can get a hi-stall converter at the corner store and I am really looking forward to having a transbrake.

Thank you. I just talked to Andre at Edge Racing today. Since I just popped my first transmission (original 1992 unit w/ 219K miles) this past Friday night, I am going to swap in a spare 92 tranny I have laying around, as well as, the 245mm 4K+ stall TC. So hopefully, I should have some results within the next 2 weeks about the new TC.

But like you said, you don't need one any more. Sorry it took so long to finally test this prototype. And with your new setup, you'll be able to get any converter you want which would have been tested millions of times already.

Not sure how you launch but if you brake torque to stall I doubt your brakes would hold but on second thought they probably wouldn't with your old one either. Regardless of how you launch you won't have to spend all that time below 4k like the old one. That always annoyed me waiting to get over 4k.

Just curious about that turbo 3.9, is that from an older car or the newer '06-'09 VVT 3.9??

Thanks!

06-09 VVT. VVT was locked when he installed the cam.

I like to launch right off idle or close to it (800-1200rpm) to shock the converter as much as possible and get the highest stall and cleanest launch. If I stall it up to 3600rpm, it will overpower the brakes. But regardless, if I stall it up as high as it will go just before it overpowers the brakes (ie ~3000rpm), then it will launch hard, then bog, then go again, resulting in a worse 60' time.

My power doesn't come on until 4100rpm with my cams and SSIM hurting my low end. So, I hope with this new converter, I will be able to launch above that right in the meat of my power band!
