Car thief broke my auto shifter. How do I replace the top part of the shifter?
A couple of months ago, my car got broken into and my stereo was stolen. The thief made a huge mess and broke my entire center console and even had to break the auto shifter in order to get the stereo head unit out. I replaced most of the center console and I bought a used shift assembly. But instead of replacing the whole shift assembly, I just want to replace the top part of the shifter if possible. The plastic housing for the shift button and overdrive button is what broke (the buttons fell out as a result), so I just want to replace it. I know that there are two screws on the shifter that should release the plastic housing, but the rubber encasing for the shifter is seemingly impossible to get off. Does the rubber enclosing come off? Any suggestions for the best way of fixing my shifter?

you'll get a lot more help if you
a: edit/re write what you just said so it's more clear exactly what you're asking
or
b: take pictures of your shifter and post here. and ask how to fix it
I highly suggest option b. just because it's easier. if you say "the plastic housing for the shift button and OD button" to me, that sounds like the entire shifter itself? please clear things up lol

Styliztik, for some reason this forum won't let me post a picture on this thread. Maybe I need to gain more experience as a member to be allowed to post? Anyways, to clarify, there is a plastic housing that makes the top of the automatic shifter that holds the overdrive button and also the shift release button on the side (you know, the button that allows you to shift between gears). During the theft, the thief cracked/broke this plastic housing and the buttons fell out. I can only shift now by pushing down the whole shifter.
Casholt, Is changing out the whole shift assembly difficult? I know that I have to remove the heat-shield for the catalytic converter to get to the bolts that hold the shift assembly in place. Is there any way that I can just take off the rubber molding that is on the shifter and replace the top plastic housing?
Thanks!

Any help with how to just replace the top of the shifter would be appreciated. Again, I'm not sure how I can take off the rubber molding.
