Fog lights vs. Driving Lights?

Which do you all prefer? I have a 96, and and am kind of unhappy with the lighting. I have put on some good 55 watt fog lights on the front, but if you can picture the front of a 95 or 96, the only place to mount fogs are right around the license plate...about a foot and a half apart from each other (probably the problem). Qestion again: should I swith/or add to existing fogs, with driving lights. Extra Question: are the OEM fog lights worth the money?

Well, fog lights are made to spead light wide, low and close to the car. driving lights are made to put the light farther and straight out.

I have a '97 GLE... and after driving the car for about four year without fog's .. I finally bought them from courtesy nissan. In my opinion I noticed a big difference in improved lighting of the road... especially in unlighted highways.. not to mention i think they give the car a much better appearance.. just my 2 cents..

I had the OEM fogs just installed on my 98 GLE before Christmas ($179.00 for the kit, $105.00 for dealer install). I don't know if they're truly worth it. It depends what type of lighting you're looking for. This is something I definitely wanted. I'm going to switch out the stock bulbs with a brighter bulb. As far as the lighting road coverage, much more downward and to the sides of the vehicle.

I've also ordered the Hanabi 6000k HID conversion kit from 97GLES. From what I here (and I can't wait to test the opinion), HIDs make a very big difference with regards to brightness and intensity. I'm currrently running PIAA 9004 headlight bulbs. I was also told that I may not even need my OEM fogs "on" once I've turned on the HIDs. We'll see ... I'll post a review once I get the kit.

you don't need to pay the dealer anything to install the foglights, my '97 GLE took a little over an hour to install... it's overall pretty easy to install... just trying to help... peace...

Well the reason that they seemed kinda down and to the sides is because that is what they are used for. So that during fog it helps by putting the light into useable places so you dont run off road or what not.
The HID kit will blow you away with brightness. It is the brightest kind of bulb you can have really. Once you have the HID's in you wont really "need" the fogs on because everything else will be so bright. They are very nice.

SuDZ:

Are you running and HID kit? If so I'd be interested in your review. I've read mrb23's review on the Osram 4300k kit. Incidently, I purchased the Osram kit days before I ordered the Hanabi's from Freddie. So, in transit are two HID kits (Osram and Hanabi).

No, I am not running the HID'S aufly expensive right now, although I have been keeping an eye on them and they have been going down in price...(good thing). Another thing that I have learned in research is that you lose your high beams with HID'S...I live in New England..and there are times when I don't see cars for a long time..I love my high beams. I am excited to here how you like them, I actually have never been in a car with them to see how they look, they look sharp on Mercades...etc.

i HEard that HID kits are bad for the maxima since they are aimed differently than the regular ones.

Don't believe that. This was the first thing that I looked for when I installed mine. The beam pattern is exactly the same as the stock lighting, except now you have a LOT more light. The street lines actually glow white or yellow, but you don't see the light shining on oncoming drivers or in rearview mirrors. Its not offensive at all. It will help you to see the right side of the road more which I desperately needed because where I live, we have deer.

For 9004 HID conversions you will lose your high beam capability. This is only crucial if you live in a state that checks for high beams when you do your vehicle emissions inspection. The brightness and intensity of HIDs make it so that you may not even need your high beams anyway. In fact I've heard of some people reaiming their HIDs downward so as not to offend oncoming traffic. I'm not sure if this is always the case or if it's just with certain applications.

I asked Courtesyparts.com and told them I'm a .org member. They said the 96 fog light kit is $200 + S&H. So its price is not so good as someone here mentioned. My local dealer said $215 + tax... Maybe price changes as time goes on. Any other places I could try? Thanks.

I ordered my factory OEM fogs in December from Auburn Nissan in Washington state for $179.95 (internet pricing). The cost doesn't include S/H since I went to the dealer.

Wow .... $180??? THAT'S CHEAP!!!!

Even $215 is cheap!!!

I'm in Abbotsford BC Canada, on the Canada/USA border about half an hour from Vancouver and my local dealer quoted me $491 Canadian which is $328 US Dollars!!!

I am 2 and a half hours from Seattle .... how far from Seattle is Auburn??? And how much (approx.) would shipping be to where I am?

I just may throgh some much better driving or fog lamps in there, a good set of piaa'a doesnt even come close to 200+ dollars...I think that is kinda funny that they sell the 5th gen. fogs for like a lil over a 100 bucks and they sell the 4th gen. fogs for twice that. Whatever...I probably will go with a good set of Piaa's, I will probably get even better performance out of them. The only thing I may lose is the smooth aesthetics of the car.

I just ordered it from Steve who gave me the same price, plus 10%(or $18) shipping to me door.
I didn't get the local dealer guy's name who quote $215. I went there and they said MSRP is $275, maybe a little discount. Forget it.
Thanks again for the info HPS.

Cool! Glad that worked out for you. I had called around to several dealers in my area and they were the lowest by far. Most wanted around $249 - $279. Odd how dealers set varied prices on accessories (lack of price control from Nissan?).
