TRANSGO SHIFT KIT

I have a transgo HD2 shift kit and some guys wanted 675 bucks to install the shift kit. I know that is way to high. How much does it usually cost to install this kit? Or should I just do it myself?

Does it include friction materials, or just a shift kit?

Does it come with performance clutches and bands, or is it just gaskets, springs, and a plate? Some "shift kits" are more accurately called a rebuild kit. If it requires replacing clutches, $675 is probably about right. If its a simlpe shift kit you could DIY or find someone to do it for $100.00.

i have that kit. a professional trans shop that doesnt have its eye on you wallet should knock it out in about 2 hours it will run you about 150-300 bones depending on the shop 675 is a ripoff

oh and by the way the "shift kit" part number before the HD2 is the trans ID HD2 is the part number

you could do it yourself but if you never have taken an auto apart you could easily screw yourself

I love it. It shifts super hard it pretty much damn near slams gear.
You know if your going up a hill an your in a high gear the RPMs start to fall so you put your foot into the throttle and wait them wait and wait some more then you hat your neck snapped because you were bogging at 30 in overdrive. That's gone.
The RPMs go all the way to redline in every gear no lag in between shifts

Thank you.
Yeah I have a full time job, wife, and 11 month old son you know a life. Sorry I'm not on the forum 24/7

but to answere you question a real good friend of mine had a job at a trans shop (now he moved on) so he installed it for me for 40 bucks.
I drove an hour away removed my valve body in his driveway then installed it after the kit was installed. It took my buddy 45 minutes to install

Seriously? Just because he asked a question before he spends 500 bucks he doesn't need to spend? Way to be a tool.

I see you have the 2000 maxima. Do the same steps apply for a 1996 maxima? Are they the same trans? Just let me know

They are not exactly the same but very similar. Just follow the instructions that come with it and they should be the same steps maybe just a little different.

they are actually very different. i have a 5th gen trans the 4th gen valve body is completely different. the solenoids, fluid routing, gaskets, theyre all different.
there is gaskets that are in between the valve body. the valve body is actually in three pieces. on the 5th gen the gaskets are bonded so i didnt replace them. on the 4th gen theyre not bonded so it would be recommended to replace them the kit should have them in it.

the steps to install it should be about the same if you do it yourself just make sure you dont loos track of what bolts go where cuz theyre all different sizes. and make sure you torque everything to spec or you will have all kinds of problems. the transgo kit has awesomely detailed instructions so it should be easy to tackle if your mechanically inclined.

i recommend to open the kit and read through the instructions. if it seems over your head, pay someone. but dont pay them 675 no more than 200. 300 if they include a flush, vehicle inspection, tire rotation and oil change.

Maxed_out--Do you mean torque the valve body bolts? What kinds of problems can you get if they aren't torqued properly?

yes the valvebody to case bolts.

the problems you will experence are; a flare in between gears, falling out of gear, poor shift quality, slips, it will be all sorts of screwed up

that has to do with your torque converter not the trans or valvebody. to check where your stall is, with the engine running and the car in drive stomp on the brake pedal and hold it with all your might. then accelerate the engine until the RPMs stop climbing. whatever RPM they stop at is your stall. a new torque converter will give you a higher stall. Theyre around 500-750 though. theyre not cheap but its worth it if you have some good mods

mine is at 2000-2200
with a 5th gen TC

I've installed 2 transgo hd2 kits on 5thgen maximas and I didn't torque a single bolt. I was actually advised not to by a local trans specialist the first time I was doing it, he said the threads are like butter and it's very easy to strip them and after doing them I agree. You will see when you pull the VB the bolts are just on there snug, so just snug them back up the same way. Feel the VB afterwards, if it is not on there tight then something is wrong, if it's on there tight then you are good to go. This is just my opinion.

Don't ever go back to that trans guy he's an idiot. The torque spec is there for a reason so you don't strip them DUH. Do it right or don't do it at all

just follow the trans-go instructions and do it yourself. They are idiot proof. If you can read, then you can install the kit yourself. Can't rush it, and buy a torque wrench. All the torque specs are on the instructions.
