To buy a new engine or get a new car
I need some help please!!!!! I have a 2003 nissan maxima, and have been told by my mechanic i need a new engine, and the est price is $4000. Is it worth it to replace the engine or get a new car?????????????
4 grand for a new engine? Go somewhere else. NOW
Get a 2nd opinion. And then a third. A new motor should only cost you 4 grand if it's a brand new motor off a '12 Maxima with 5 miles on it. You should be able to get a 06+ VQ35 installed for under 3 grand

My buddy charges me bout $500 labor to install an engine so if the motor is $1,000 then total cost out the door is ~$1,500. Not even close to ur $4,000 quote way over priced. Find a mechanic that understands how to do the swap then find a 04-08 engine at www.car-part.com remember altima and quest engines also fit and might be cheaper than maxima engines

4k better be brand new from NISSAN ...

A little advice from me is don't try looking for an engine claiming they have lower mileage on it because you'll never know the condition of it until you install it nor do you know how the person cared for it. Look for one in your price range and change the tensioners and guides and if you have a few more hundreds to spare do the chains, that way you'll have a peace of mind knowing your engine will last 100-200K with no issues providing you check your oil level weekly and keep up with your regular oil changes and maintenance.
4K? You should ask around for referrals for a reasonable and trusting mechanic.

When you say the mechanic said you need a new engine, what exactly are you saying? Was the engine blown, seized, something broken in it or just the average tensioner noise that VQ's are so common for? Do explain how the mechanic came to the conclusion that your engine is toasted and your only option is buying a newer one which will run you 4K

Get a used later model VQ35 and swap over all the acessories ad drop it it....You never did saw what the problem was that caused this shop to try to sell you a suppossibly *NEW* Nissan OEM engine which is $6027.06 from Courtesy....So that $4000 price must be *Remanufactured*! I sure you can find a used 2008 for much less....Good luck!
I just bought a new 07' VQ35 with 60k for $1,000, me and my buddy just finished the swap.. You might want to consider and new clutch and possibly a new flywheel as well. I also had all my timing chain's and tensioners done since the engine was out. These are notorious for wearing out on the VQ's. All these things will extend the life of your engine too, may as well do it since it will save you in the long run.
