How Expensive Can a Tranny Swap be?? Auto To 5spd

hey I recently started working on my 96 maxima after a while of no use. Looking to swap the old auto transmission with a 5speed manual. Any ideas of what it might cost? Thanks

doing it yourself...cost of parts, 500 bucks or so if that.

Getting it done at a shop...triple that, at least.

Search around for all the aprts you'd need and then makeyour decision

The 5 spd in our 4th gens is actually weaker than the auto...the Input Shafts go out...perhaps you should look at doing a 6 spd swap instead?

I'm keeping my auto since they're sssoooo common and handle more power.. lol maybe you want a shift kit instead? Or the drop resistor mod....

You must have never been in a modded 4at.. how common is an i30? 4at lsd swap? super cheap and common compared to a 5spd i30.. shift kit? not too pricey. Drop resistor mod? about $10. And then you have perfect shifts that slam into gear faster and stronger every time in an overall stronger transmission. It may seem like a little less fun, but it's fun in a different way. Plus it just makes sense for functionality, cost efficiency, and retaining that sleeper-status.

No way now how $500.

You can't find a decent trans alone for less than 600 or 700. Plus you will probably have to ship it. So, I'd figure 700-800. $800 was the best I could do when I replaced my 5spd last month.

Then you've got: decent clutch - $300; flywheel $ 200-600, axles $200 unless you use crap rebuilt, shift mechanism ???, other misc parts.

If you got lucky at the junkyard or on here and got a used flywheel, shifter mechanism and axles, great deal on the trans, use crappy clutch (which is the one thing I wouldn't skimp on) . . . maybe you get it done for $1000.

I think you will find yourself closer to $1500 than $1000.

Edit: I forgot that you should be able to get something for your auto trans and parts. So, I would say around $1000.

Here is the link.

http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...wap-850-a.html

That appears to me to be a clutch with 145k miles on it. Not a new one. It would make no sense whatsoever to throw the used clutch back in there. Unless you like dropping the trans yourself. I've done mine several times and it just isn't fun.

So, even if he's still got it and you could make a deal, you need to factor in the cost of a new clutch. And probably a resurface of the flywheel. (Yeah I know ours are dual mass and shouldn't be resurfaced. I've never had a problem and mine has been done twice.)

a modded maxima 4at doesn't shift faster than i do, and it doesn't get down the track faster either (except for jime's heavily modded, stripped out, nitroused 3.5 barely streetable exception).

i will agree with you though that *properly* modded it can handle more power than a stock 5spd can, but that doesn't come into play until you're looking at north of 350ish lb-ft of torque for the most part.
