BEWARE: Local shop ripped me off. Questions about synthetic oil and SC'ers also

It is the Grease Monkey on Bankhead here in Carrollton. I brought my car in for a regular oil change and filter since I have nowhere to change it myself. I did some price comparisons and everywhere charged pretty much the same price and this place was close to where I lived. They messed up and gave me their most expensive "Oil Express Deluxe, rip you up the a$$ service" and I got reamed bad on how much this stuff costs. After confronting them on this they said that it was due to the type of oil that I put on there. I was ****ed so I drove off and noticed that some quarters were laying near my shifter which means someone helped themselves to my change. I brought this up to the manager and he said that he resented that I would emply that one of his employees would do that and that I should come down there and file a police report. F*($@ these dumbass country bumpkins. If you want something done right do it yourself and drive these sh!tholes companies out of business.

Damn am I ****ed!

I got 10W30 Mobile 1 Synthetic, is it really good for 6,000 miles even with a SC?

If you didn't 'sign up' for a EXPRESS DELUXE, you can't be charged for it... At least that is how it's suppose to work... unauthorized work without consent can be a free gift.

I use 0-30W Mobile 1... I think I'll change it at about 4K (3750)... My oil is still clear after 1.2K miles so far with SC.

Color has zero to do with weather an oil is in "good" condition or not.

No one with a blower has been brave enough to go more than 4k that I'm aware of (unless Kev has changed his tune or has let Jane "dare" to go long intervals).

My contention is on a blower with synthetic to go 6 months between changes with a filter change at 3 months or go 7500 miles between changes with a filter change at 3750 miles. Unfortunately, no one here has had the guts to make me a liar or look brilliant.

The Oil Analysis sticky post will better answer questions/concerns from a data standpoint...

Jane and I are still doing 3K oil changes. I wanted to have a sample sent to Blackstone, but we didn't have a kit when I was doing the oil change last week (don't know where the two kits went... probably lost them during the move).

Clear on synthetics would (my rule of thumb) mean it's still good. The SC doesn't nearly reach the operating temps that a Turbo sees. When I do/did my oil changes at 4-5K, the oil is pretty dark. I know that a dark oil doesn't necessarily mean that the oil is bad (especially synthetic). I may put the 7500 w/o filter change to the test... but probably not due to me being brave as much as lazy

Exactly. I once had a dealer who did an alignment when I had dropped the car off for other work. I said that I did not authorize them to do this (my car was not pulling or anything) and would not pay. It was comp'd.

I had a similiar situation a few weeks ago and Jiffy Lube was real nice about it. I came in wanting just a tranny flush with synthetic. They did a drain/refil of both my tranny AND oil. Then I asked if they did the flush and they realized they did the wrong thing. I had just put Mobil 1 synthetic oil in the engine and they drained that for regular oil so I get a free oil change for synthetic whenver I go back over there. Took about 2.5 hours to but I got some free stuff.

skimax,

It would be great if you don't mind e-mailing me those results to include in the next version of the Oil Analysis spreadsheet, due out next week. A few of us would actually be interested in the results.

Seriously, color does not matter. Metal shavings suspended in the oil is a bad sign, but a dark color is not.....

It's amazing, as I see so much willingness from members to be lazy and take shortcuts, yet when you can be lazy by extending oil drain intervals, the Jiffy Lube brainwash affects can be seen clear as day by those same members.

It actually pays to be lazy when it comes to oil changes........

Kev, Blackstone just sends me a box of containers everytime I get oil analyzed, so I practically have inventory like they do of these things. That's a poor excuse for not getting it analyzed. Plus, Jane promised you would do that for me......

That's true.

I would suggest that if there really was a theft, as the mgr said, report it. But I'd be doubly sure, because sometimes our minds play tricks on us when we're upset. As a mgr I'm gonna defend my employees too, cause it's innocent til proven otherwise.

Anyway, grease shops are usually a last resort. Like you said, I'd care less about the change, I'd wonder if my oil were even replaced. ALWAYS MARK THE FILTER if you drop it off with someone. C'mon now.

I have gone about 7500 [ok, maybe 8k ] on blower + mobil 1 10w30 synthetic. (just once, i swear baby! )

Havent noticed any problems yet, im on 2 oil changes later.. however I got lazy and i let midas $5 reg 5w30 oil change get to me..

However, with something so expensive, I don't mind shellin out for the oil changes at 2-3k. Just all sorts of crap happening back then and I never got to change my motor oil. In fact, the batch of Mobil1 10w30 full syn & filter are still sitting in my garage.. along with the sets of plugs that im supposed to change.

So .. YES it can survive 7500 w/ v1 & 3.48 .. but i dont drag .. just like to push it once or twice a day on the freeway, 90 and up n such.

I live in an apartment, no garage but I got an oil pan from Autozone.

Everytime I need an oil change, I go to Autozone, buy a Bosch filter (closer than the dealership), save the receipt as indication I did the oil change for extended warranty purposes and take the old oil to Autozone for recycling. I still spend about $15 for the oil change, but I prefer doing it myself, and I also get to buy the oil of my choice instead of settling for the bulk oil they have. I'm using Castrol synth-blend now, if I spend about $25, I'll be on Castrol Synth.

You might think about doing the oil changes yourself ...

Damn...sorry to hear that. Without reading the whole i'll comment so sorry if I say something that's been said. I personally know one of the Grease Monkey Franchise owners and I will tell you that is not how they operate. I would start by contacting the corporate office and file a complaint. I guarantee one of the employees did go through your stuff and the manager probably reacted the way he did because of the conversation you had previously. Once you don't get anywhere with him then it's time to go over his head. Good luck...
