More HP or more TQ?

Which is better??? More horsepower or more torque? Doesn't horsepower depend on torque or something like that?

One is a mathmatical calulation of the other. So what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

TQ is for bottom end (like acceleration from dead stop) and HP for for mkaing power on the high rpm band. HP is more important for top speed races. More TQ is advised for dead stop accelerations. HP is what drivers the car on high-end and Torque is makes the car fly during launch & low speeds.

Ex: (Just to try to clear that poor explanation of mine above up)
If two identical cars raced/same driver skills (its an example for gods sake!). Car 1 has 150lbs & 150hp vs Car 2 that has 120lbs & 180hp.

Car 1 will get the jump off Car 2 b/c it has more torque but once moving towards the higher rpm band and higher speeds, Car 2 will pull ahead b/c its mkaing more HP.

Sorry, im not great with explainations. (Please correct me if im wrong).

I understand. So a car with a high hp and low to moderate torque will have higher trap speeds because it has better top end??

That is if both cars are the same weight, gearing and aerodynamics. Horsepower is just a # to be thrown around and admired/scoffed at. For example if I say my 3.0L car has 300hp/200tq NA everyone is like that is great. Now if I were to say my 3.0L has 200hp/300tq everyone would give a second look and say I guess that is okay. But then again if the first example was like 300hp @ 6000rpm/200tq @ 4500rpm its decent. However lets say it does 200hp @ 3500rpm/300tq @ 5250rpm, I still have a 300hp engine with way more torque. BTW it would be alittle under-rated too hehe .

Horsepower = [(Torque x RPM) / 5252]

The amount of horsepower you make depends directly upon how much torque the engine has, and how much of that it can hold to higher RPM's.

Honda's tiny 2.0L F20C engine in the S2000 only has 153 lb-ft of torque, but it can hold almost all of that waaaaay the heck up high above 8000rpm. Maximum horsepower is achieved at 8300rpm where it makes 240HP.

240HP = [(Torque x 8300rpm) / 5252]
Torque = 152 lb-ft @ 8300rpm

Peak torque is 153 lb-ft @ 7500 rpm

Here's a really long (but informative) WRITE-UP I did on Horsepower vs. Torque over at www.accordv6.com It'll take awhile to read, but after that you'll be an expert

how do gear ratios play into the mix, it seems like a s2000 could have a really low set of gears because the engine spins buck wild while a 5.0 could have a taller set of gears because the torque is sweat. sorry if im adding too many varibles into the mix but could someone explain, por vavor

i say we make a mod to fit SteVTEC in a max, if no mod is posible we should work to make it a TSB so someone else can 'fix it'

I LOVE torque.

OK, with that said, the 305-inch V8 that we built for my Monte Carlo SS makes a ton of torque, which is lots of fun on the street. I can pick on stock late-80's Vettes and GTAs with my smaller motor because the car also has 3.73 gears, which are great for acceleration. Of course, it kills top speed too, so there's always a tradeoff.

My best quarter-mile pass with the car has been a 15.0 @ 93mph...really should be in the 14.6-14.7 range, but I can't hook up for **** off the line. I have the car set up for handling (1" drop, 16x8 wheels, stiff shocks), not drag launches.

I have a "mod" that I'm going to try the next time I drop by Nissan, and no, it doesn't involve the use of any chain or hacksaws on either the car or my right leg

I may be able to shoehorn myself into one after all

Pray for me
