Loose, wobbly front head rests?

I test drove a 2012 Maxima this afternoon. It already has 42000km on the clock but it was in good condition. However, I was worried and confused but the front head rests. They were very wobbly and if I pushed the driver's head rest back I could feel something dig into my back from inside the seat. Presumably that's the bottom of the bar of the head rest. I don't remember the head rests in the other Maximas I drove being that loose and wobbly. Has anyone seen this before? And can anyone check their head rests and tell me how tight or loose they are? Thanks

I have a '12 and noticed the same thing. Not a big deal to me at all. However I wonder why they made them to push forward and not backwards...?? You would think in impact when slamming back in your seat the headrest if it flexed backwards would act to absorb some of the whiplash.

Not to hijack your thread but has anyone had a wobbly passenger seat at high speeds? Dealership told me it was a $600 dollar fix, I told them I can live with the small wobble it makes.

There was a fix for it released a few months ago.

Call your dealership and mention the NTB mentioned in the thread, NTB09-041.

I've been meaning to do this as well.

Thank you sir! I'm going to mention this to them since I have an appointment Tuesday.

Edit: It looks like this is for 2009 models only?

APPLIED VEHICLE: 2009 Maxima (A35)
APPLIED VIN: Vehicles built before 1N4AA51E(*)9C 849053
APPLIED DATE: Vehicles built before May 1, 2009

I'll take the paperwork in anyways and see what they say lol.

The headrest on my 09 SV is solid as a rock. It moves forward if its pushed that way but all the way back real solid. You cannot feel the anything from inside the seat. The OP should have this fixed before buying the car as it looks like the headrest frame detached inside the seat.

Thanks all. This post makes sense to me - I didn't sit in the passenger seat so I don't know if it's any different. I now understand about the active head rests, but this particular car doesn't feel right. Cheers

Dealership went ahead and ordered the parts already. They said they will fix the issue for free. Thanks again for the information.

My '09 SV headrest is also solid. This headrest is part of an active restraint system, and is supposed to instantly move slightly forward at the instant of impact in order to keep the back of our head (which is not normally in contact with the headrest when driving) from having to snap sharply backward until it hits the headrest at full force. This may seem counterintuitive, but tests have shown this system reduces neck and upper spine injuries.

If my headrest was loose, I would suspect the bracket portion of the headrest that extends down inside inside the back of the front seat may have detached from the frame inside the seat back. But that would simply be my guess.
