How many tensioners are there? Which tensioner do I ask for at Nissan. I figure since I will be replacing the water pump I should replace the tensioner as well. Thank You in advance!!

 

If your car is not a 95 or 96 you probably don't need a new tensioner. It is spring loaded.

They are all spring loaded, but in 97 or so they changed the shape of it. Problem is that if you buy the new one you will not be able to install it, since the chain guide is also different, so stick with the existing one. I did that and no problems for 2 years so far. If you decide to go new, buy the chain guides and open the chain cover and change them too.

 

Depending on the mileage you have, the tensioner and guide may have already been replaced with the updated one. Does your timing cover look as if someone opened it before and sealed it back and silicone is sticking up? If so, remove tensioner from access door and post pic so we can tell you if it is old or newer tensioner.
