Spring busted and went into my tire! (Pics)

Got in my driveway and I herd hissing. thought I ran over a nail or something. Nope! the coil broke and carved a nice gouge in the back of my tire.

Its possible that it is, I would hope so, because if a newer one did that, well it would be sh*t. The car has has several owners so I dont know the exact record.

Is it good practice to replace both front shocks/coilover assembly?

Glad no injury to you or the car. When that happened to my dad and his Sable several years ago, his tire was not as damaged and he used a pair of vise grips to keep the spring on the strut mount until he could get to safer grounds.

Looks like the spring rusted onto the strut housing and that time was a little too much force for it to handle and it snapped. If that is an OE spring its the first time i have seen one go on the forums, if its eibachs than yea we seen stuff like this already.....@ eibachs:

Dang. I had this happen on my old Aurora. Luckily it got caught on the lower spring mount and didn't round itself around in to the tire. I had ~1/2" of clearance. cost me $120 for new front springs.

I planned on keeping my stock springs from my Maxima....but I could sell you both of them. They have 81k miles on them and in good shape. I just took them off 2 weeks ago and put lowering springs on. I suggest replacing both so they both have the same mileage on them or they 'may' make the car ride different....that is if your car has a lot more miles on it.

I've had this happen with a set of Eibachs on my '89 Maxima. This has been mentioned a few times in the 5th gen forums. Spring breakage is rare but not uncommon. Mine happened on the interstate and I was able to make it home without issue. This is a great example for everyone who has ignored their suspension and live with salted roads for a good portion of the year......get your suspension inspected!

Glad you're okay! Looked like you needed tires anyway!

Ouch man. If you lived close to me I'd give you my OEM springs that's just sitting in the driveway to be thrown away. Sorry to see that man but I guess now it's a good time to upgrade your suspension, all of them. KYB GR-2 and any lowering spring is your best band for your buck.

As others have mentioned, it is a rare occurrence for that to happen, but not unheard of, especially in areas with salted winter roads. Glad that in California this isn't a big worry.

Glad you're OK.

Think of it as a good excuse to get Illuminas or coilovers.
Your car will bounce back.

Yuuup!

looks like mine about 4 months ago other than the tire. I was lucky I guess
on a positive note the front struts are a 10 min job to change and when you do them you can corner on 2 wheels again

I've seen this happen before a few times, look like the tires were shot anyways, would have been worse if it happened to new tires.

I had a rear coil spring break on a 4 year old BMW 330I. It took out the sway bar link too from the drop. Funny part was, the car drove pretty much perfectly fine, aside from the noise. Dealer replaced everything under their "courtesy" warranty program.

Hey, lottery ticket time! If it was me, it would've happened in the boonies with no cell service and my spare would be flat...my luck!

Wow. Very interesting. Not the first time I've seen a broken OEM spring - but definitely the first time I've seen one cause that type of damage. Glad it was only the tire...one that was on its way out at that!

Had to check out the video. Over 70 mph in a boat? Yikes.

As far as springs breaking, that's something you can't really see unless you pull them off the car ..what yearly?
