when i shut my car off and open the door, the seatbelt doesnt move so i cant get out. i have to turn the ignition back on and hold the door open for it to retract so i can get out. anybody know what's wrong? it's really annoying and embarassing. it used to do it every once and a while but would always fix itself. it's been like this for a couple of days now. could it be some fuses or something?

It may be your seatbelt tensioning/lock

...on the floor between the seats there appears to be a tensioner that tightens the cross-shoulder portion of the seat belt during high-speed maneuvers (i.e., hitting a big sweeper at high speed and powering all the way through, creating a lot of lateral g's or stomping on the binders during a high speed left/right). I noticed that the shoulder piece actually tightens down and feels tight across my chest and has caused the automatic shoulder retract to stay in the "closed" position when I shut the car off and open the door. I just adjust the seat a little backwards to take the tension off the belt and that seems to do it. I also remember another post somewhere on this forum about the retracts so you might want to do a search for that too. Good luck.

Re: It may be your seatbelt tensioning/lock

Jim---Mine does this too. I can be a psychic and I can tell that when that happens, you just went around a corner very (or somewhat) fast/hard. When I try to get out, the seat belts are locked. The solution is ver simple: Press te emergency lock to loosen the belt so it unlocks, then put it back in. Problem solved. Lesson learned here: Don't corner hard going into your driveway. :-)

Id hate to ressurect a decade old thread- but I have a prob where my seatbelt will not lower itself when I turn the car off, then open the door. I must open the door then turn the car off for the belt to work.

Tl;dr my belt has no power without the car in the on position

Dang, this thread is almost as old as the internet itself!

Yes, the seat belts have a lifetime warranty. Some dealers are A-holes about providing the warranty work.

The best thing to do if you have seat belt problems is to call a dealer and try to get a nice service rep.

So they'll fix the electric gremlins in the seatbelt system too? Damn, this is a first. I thought my car wasn't susceptible to electrical problems. Just those damn window regulators.

Dealer should cover it. Just in case, I keep a spare set as part of the garage full of extra Maxima parts I have. I'd try and get a new set first.

I pinpointed the problem. My puddle lights, seatbelts, and door locks dont get power unless I twist the headlight stalk!

Whats this crap?!
