A friend recommended this stuff. Now the wipers chatter like crazy and I want to get it off. Any fast way to do this, other than time and washing the car many times?

I use it on all my cars and don't have any issues. I even use the RainX windshield Washer fluid.... Absolutely love the stuff. Don't need wipers on while on the hiway

To get it off, use rubbing alchohol

Issue may be is that you don't have uniform coating from your initial application

Wipers ARE new. RainX is crap!!

 

RainX is one of the best things ever invented. You just didn't apply it correctly. Don't blame rainX for your inability to apply it.

That said, I'm sure you can get it off with a solvent or alcohol of some sort. Or you could just apply it correctly and be thrilled with it, like everyone else in the world who has tried it.

 

The only time I have ever had problems with rain-x is when I didn't apply it properly to the windshield. Try again, OP

 

I sprayed it on , let it dry and buffed it with a damp cloth.

Spray it on, buff/apply it like a wax, let it haze, wipe it off, wait about 5 minutes and wipe again to see if you missed a spot



RainX is hands down one of the best things I do for "upkeep". I rarely ever have to turn my wipers on

 

None works better than RainX.

Blame the gov. None of the the ammoniac-free glass cleanner works. It is simply blueish, soapy liquid that does not remove anything on your windshield. Well you may never know if the liquid is made in the country either.

Scrape with your hands, or well use brake cleanner if you are frustrated enough and don't care if it may damage your windshield's coating, if any.

 

Don't buy/use RainX 2-1 POS. Use the RainX Original only.

my 130k mile windshield has a lot of pitting and even with a flawless RainX application and brand new RainX Latitude wipers, there are lots of little streaks when wiping small amounts of water, but no chatter.

You can try to apply RainX again, this time correctly. Or a buffing with the finest grade steel wool might help.



Curious, what wipers are you using?

 

if you combine rainX with the rainX orange wiper fluid, you never even need to reapply the stuff. it's incredible. i haven't put rainX on in over 2 years and water still beads right off.

If you don't have any rain x handy, car wax work just as good. I've used the original turtle wax with good results.

 

Wiper chatter is usually related to the set that a blade gets from being pushed to one side when not being used. This causes the blade to not lay down slightly and wipe, but to be leaning backwards and it tries to chisel and chatters.
On some cars I have had, I was able to just unclip the blade and reverse it in the holder but I don't think I can on my Maxima or Infiniti. On the Maxima, I have actually twisted the arm slightly until the blade would lay both ways evenly when it would change direction.
If the arm is twisted the wrong way, new wipers will not help.

 

Steel wool on a windshield?
Yes, it will help. You should use steel wool on your windows, make sure to hit it real good and hard and buff the crap out of it! It will help.

I hope you stay away from steel wool, no matter how fine it may be. Only thing it will help with is leaving millions of little scratches in your windshield that will never come out. You can simply use soap and water to clean the rain-x off, use an appropriate microfiber/terry cloth for the windows so you don't scratch them. Wash thoroughly and scrub it good, that's all it takes, it's not some kind of violent epoxy that you need steel wool or anything of the sort to remove. Wash it well and scrub good, buff and wipe dry with clean cloth, and repeat the steps as needed if you can't get it all the first time.

That said, I back up the fact that Rain-X is an awesome product. Have been using it for years on all my cars windows. Water just runs right off in the rain. I use their windshield washer fluid, windshield cleaning spray, etc, etc. I even have the Rain-X wiper blades which work awesome.

The reason you're having this problem = last thing you want to do is let the stuff dry on the car. I can't think of one such product that calls for letting it dry on the car, even those that direct you to wait a few min for it to work still must be wiped off and finished before ever being dry. When you let it dry, it simply creates a horrible uneven coating of dried up crap and is not intended to work that way. Have you ever tried washing your car and not rinsing off? It's the same principal here, you have to apply it and then wipe/buff before it dries.

ok, ok, I give,
I screwed up and didn't apply it right. I just sprayed in on and didn't spread it while wet. I let it dry in vertical streaks and then buffed it off, creating peaks and valleys, hence the chatter. I managed to get if off - lots of elbow grease, rubbing alcohol, etc. Now the window is SO Clean, the wipers are chattering again, but much less. Also it was just misting here in Seattle, so no real water to wipe. BTW I use sillblades, made of silicon. they last for ever when kept clean, etc. A little pricey and you get them from the Net, not a store.

 

I had a bad experience with Rain-X. I was driving from Texas to Florida and back. Hurrican season with a bunch of tropical storms around the gulf. I applied the Rain-X and it was great for a bit. No need for wipers on the highway. Then it seemed to wear off in patches. I started getting " splotches" of water that were clinging to the glass in big patches. No big deal, I'll just use the wipers. Well the new wipers were now chattering and skipping all over. I stopped, tried cleaning the windshield with everything under the sun....no help. I tried to re-apply more Rain-X. It helped some but was not as good as before. I'll just avoid it now and make sure to have good quality blades on.
