half of my instrument cluster lights went out

I have a 2001 nissan maxima se and the entire left side of my cluster lights went out. Which include, the speedometer, fuel gauge, left turning blinker, air bag light, and the high beam light comes on sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. I tried putting one of the bulbs that work onto the slots that have bulbs that don't work and nothing.

Can the actual cluster be faulty? or does one bulb cause a black out all around? Any ideas what this might be? I really wanna get this fixed.

One bulb will not cause a black out, I have played around with mine. The bulbs may be inserted upside down. Even though it locks in place, it can be incorrect, and it wont illuminate. Try spinning the bulb the opposite way and see if it works. Make sure its tight as well, some of mine required needle nose pliers (new bulbs)

If it does not work the next step Id say would be to check your car is getting proper voltage with a multimeter. Check your grounds. If that is fine then I think you may have a bad cluster

If the bulbs are black at all, they have blown

Long time buddy, and lol yeah cause im so hippy.
(i actually have done some hiking recently :P)

My maxima was dead for the past 6 months. The timing was off and I needed a new engine. Took months and months to find an engine, a shop, and the hardest part the $.

I now owe my dad and my stepmom mad $.. but I have my car back.

and even after a new engine, water pump and tensioner, I still have the chatter at cold start .

Wish I knew what caused this and if I can get the shop to fix it. That noise is the chain slipping on the waterpump and wearing away the sprocket :'(, it only going to happen again :'(

anyways,

Take care friend!

The cluster has 4 bulbs for general illumination as part of the dash lights. There are 2 near the top center and one near the bottom corners. The plastic socket for these light bulbs are black in color. All the others (the warning lights) are brown.

See page 113 for a layout diagram.

Look for the "Meter Illumination" lights.

I just pulled out my cluster and it doesn't look like that in the back. It looks like all the indicators like the airbag light, abs light, ses light, you know all that stuff? They're connected directly to the circult board of the cluster. the only ones with bulbs are the turning signals and 3 or 4 illumination lights. Could it be because my car is manual transmission? I know the clusters are different.

I also noticed a huge crack on the circult board and the air bag light is not there, as if someone ripped it off. I'm guessing this crack is what blacked out the cluster huh?

...time for a new cluster yaay.

Problem solved!

Ended up being that my cluster was busted. Swtched it with a pratically new 20th anniversary cluster and everything works.

Nissan would change the cluster design. I know they did it in the 5.5 gen without any documentation. I was not aware that they had done it in the 2001, but am not surprised.

The cluster is the same regardless of the transmission type.

Cudos for having an eagle eye and catching the crack. That isn't something that normally happens.

For me it was the actual cluster which was burnt out. Whoever had the car before me played with it and cracked the motherboard of it in half. Surprised the gauges worked. Ended up finding a totalled 2001 AE and got the cluster off of it for $50. 190k on the odo but works perfect.

mine left side has been going out randomly since this cold winter, but luckily it comes on shortly sometime right after start up. First noticed it in Feb, and not at all this summer and now on a 50 deg f morning it went out again at start up, but luckily came right on about a min later.

I have been having this exact same problem with the speedometer’s lights and sometimes it switches up the right side which makes me think the lights are just fine but there would be a faulty wire or something.
Any solution?

this has been occurring in this 2001 Ive been in.
as soon as the weather temps dive down half the cluster lighting doesnt come on from a cold start
then after about a minute or two it finally comes on.
Since I had a bad catalytic converter then a bad HO2S then iacv/ECM gave out
I was just happy to be up and running.

What about a campaign to get Nissan to fix it?

mine has been consistently out a lot more now and in warmer weather, its on less than it is off now.

bought LED's to replace, but not sure if it is a bulb issue
